    Re: VW Inboard motor??

OK I'm have owned up to owning a VW here in the past.
If you have a look at most of the stock old air cooled VW they are in a farley closed box anyway. They run shields underneath allowing only half of the motor exposed and only have small intake ports.
VW engines run there own fan that forces the cool air over the engine fins (barrel and head) and oil cooler down to the ground.
SO if you could duct your cowling enough you could get it to run inside a boat.
I would run the fan backwards so it suck the air up past the fins then out the ducts.
IMO its not hard to get half decent horsepower and torque out of a VW engine. Mine had stock bottom end and heads with a few little extras and it come up to the 100hp range. with less than 1000 dollars spent.
rev and hold revs for a period was never a drama for it. it was happy to sit on 4000 rpm all day.
They used to used in litre spint car motors for years. running up against motor cycle engines.
My mate has one in a off road racer and he had a tacko fitted after a few races to see what it was reving at. He removed it as it scared him on what the thing reved it to with little too no complaints. for the record he is a well known VW engine builder
Correctly tuned the vibration in my VW motor was no more than any other motor.
The good thing is they can run on 2 pots to get you home if there was ever a drama. How many other engines can run on half of there pots?
the weight of the engine would not be any heavier than my 60hp merc.
IMO with the right set up and the right prop you could un a VW motor in a boat.

Yes they are a little noisy through the exhaust but i'm sure you could make the pipe come out in the water like some speed boats do.
Some people say that they are unreliable. that was mostly in the points. You can now buy electronic points that elliminate that problem.
A good point and a bad point about the VW is the blocks are made out of magnesium. they dont rust like steel but they do burn and explode if they caught on fire. Oh and you cant put the fire out real easy.

What are the Air Boats the Yanks use on the everglades powered with? I was under the impression that the basic ones were VW powered, but may be wrong!?. (They put some big V8s etc on them as well!!)

My dad was a timber cutter and we used the 1500cc Veedub motors to power our circular saws and swing saws. Leaked oil like buggery (out of those plastic pushrod tubes) but they used to go for ever!.

    Cheers
