you seem to be implying that I do nto take others on the boat with me..far from reality. I rarely go alone..what i did say was..I never take money from anyone for going on the boat with me.
recently sold the offshore rig, but my rules were deckie pays for half the bait, ice and boat fuel for the trip, he gets half the fish, regardless of who caught what.
mind you, I was pretty particular on who got the invite, the regular crew knew exactly what to do, could fish, put boat over the mark if I was busy, and didnt get crook, all helps
cheers
brian
i dont charge a cent either
my fuel bill on boat is about average$200 car $50
bait$70 ice free
i clean boat and they get a feed
and i mainly fish offshore

Not a fair post Pete. Commercial doesn't count.
Pinhead, I hear what you are saying, but not everyone has their own business and not struggling for a quid. You are one of the exceptions that can afford it. But most of us are not in that financial situation. It is always a lot easier to spend when you have teh money to spend. If you did start doing offshore trips then you may well change your mind. maybe not.
Greg, I don't think we would be able to get out for a fish, because if you came on my boat you would have to share the cost, and I couldn't come on your boat beacuse I always share the cost on others boats.
For a long time I have been paying for everything, except occasionally the neighbour who comes with me a fair bit would pay for the bait and ice. We typically burn around 180-200 litres of fuel per trip. We then have the issue of figuring out how to divide up the fish fairly.
Now that we are going out a lot more and catching decent fish more regularly, I have been tempted to introduce the rule where all costs are split evenly amongst the people on board and then the fish are also split evenly.
If I pay for everything I keep all the fish is the way I look at it! The deckies get a free fishing trip out of the deal, but because I paid I keep!
Honestly though it is all getting too hard....I am tempted to go back to only taking my family and leaving the neighbours/friends etc. out of the equation otherwise somebody's nose is likely to get put out of place.
I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way to do this and I am sure it doesn't matter what you do somebody is going to get upset at some stage.
My only tipif splitting all the costs and the fish is to have an agreement before you go so the deckies can't chose whether to pay or not depending on the catch!
Hi all
well most of the time I prefer to fish by myself and on occasions I'll have someone on board .
rules my rules safety always comes first
Anchor prefer to do this myself as have had some Deckies that have placed anchor in an 5mins later your drifting.
as for paying If they wish to contribute that is fine however I never ask for fuel Bait normally have more than enough onboard.
have had mates onboard that have no idea on boats so again I give them a run down on the if's and but's with no questions asked.
however saying this I still prefer to do most things my self that way If any thing happens it is my responsibility and no blame to anyone else.
now for the question to you guy's do you make sure your Deckies whether a sea vet or just a beginner knows where every thing is (eg) Safety gear Radio and how it works and what to do if Emergency pops up and how to start and drive your Vessel? not a silly question as I have ask a few people i know with boats and this is the one thing they forget again safety first
I may not have much in cash but when I do get on the water if someone is coming with me the company is great good conversation and laughter and supply there own gear if not then I will supply the gear so long as they look after it
if they break it they replace it, believe me took one mate out and he lost a good Rod an Reel over the side still waiting for the replacement but has never been on board since.
Cheers
Steve
Splitting the cost of taking someone out for the day fishing is only the start of the real cost. When you consider what we all spend on maintenance/electronics/tackle/boat purchase. But I am sure that is not what any of us where thinking when we bought our boats. The main thing I think is as long as the Deckie helps out with whatever is fair and resonable and everyone has good and safe day on the water.
Nathan
Keechie PM your number and if i need a deckie during winter i will give you a ring.
Cheers Scott
look its fair if someone chucks you some money. now, im not someone that makes alot of money as im only a student. to what some of you guys have described, no offence ofcourse, deckies sound like slaves that have to pay to come on your boat. if i was have a "deckie" on my boat and cleaned the boat etc. i wouldnt make the poor bugger pay. if they wanted to come out and they helped with the cleaning etc. yeah if we splitting cleaning why not. but mates are mates, i dont take money from them![]()
