Long time reader, first time poster so here we go. I have a sounder on my tinnie which i believe is a very cheap one. If the boat is idling or just drifting around the sounder works fine. As soon as i give the motor any throttle, the depth suddenly drops out to between 150-200m. Its obvious it isnt this deep when you can see the bottom. I have heard that this can be because of incorrect positioning of the transducer. Anyone care to shed some light on my situation?
there is a book (and a DVD version) available on using Depth Sounders, put together by Rick Huckstepp. It is a beauty and covers in great detail things like fitting and positioning of the transducer, plus everything else you need to know about setting up and using your sounder menus etc.
Do yourself a favour and track down a copy, try the local library even!
"For the Sonar system to work effectively and efficiently the positioning and the
installation of the transducer is vital. If the transducer is obstructed, angled or placed in the wrong area then the system is useless.
The location of the transducer must be so that it has smooth water flow at all times, if it doesn’t then there maybe random interference on the display.
Make sure the transducer is not mounted too close to the outboard engine approx 1 foot away. This will stop Cavitation interference caused by the propeller."
