idling revs 135 87 Mariner
Guys, had a bit of an issue with my 87 Mariner / Merc for sometime now...doffivult to start, rough idling etc. Anyway, it turns out just a dirty jet and a housing screw loose and running sweet as now. The mechanic has it idliing around 1200rpm? I'm glad to see it idling sweetly now without conking out without extra throttle but is that a bit high?

1200rpm????????
Thats why its idling without stalling and probably nothing to do with what you were told.
Merc v6's have a decal on the engine warning of no idle rpm above 750rpm. You need to have the idle correctly set. If thats how it was handed back to you, find a new mechanic because yours has no idea.....
I assume he knew it was idling high?
Cheers

fender, if it idles badly at low rpm it could have an air leak somewhere, and can lean out the engine at all revs, check your plugs to see, if there white you are to lean, drop the idle down and look for a leak any place you think there might be one, I used (3 in one quickstart engine starter and conditioner, non ether) this stuff is good cause it lubes at the same time, i use it for my diesel engine too. use the small straw to pin point areas and when the idle improves thats the possible leak or near it, mine happend to be that the pin that works the butterfly shaft/housing was worn, but could be low float level too or crud in the jets. good luck mon
