    G'day
Humminbird 787 and 797 gps/sounders need to be updated to the latest software. They receive a Japanese WAAS satellite system and get very confused as Australia doesn't have WAAS.
If you contact Peter Anker at Humminbird in Australia peter.anker@bla.com.au He will reprogram them for you or if you imported them yourself, contact Keith Councell at Humminbird America and he will send you the latest software.

Your after vers 4.140 or later. Keith can be contacted at kcouncel@johnsonoutdoors.com

I'm seriously considering ordering a 787c2i, how detailed are the maps for over here in aus?

and how good is the fishID on the finder side?

the way Humminbird uses their FishID is that they overlay the icons over rar data.

for instance. if your travelling in a lake and cross over a huge tree all your going to get is a mass of big red blotch on your sounder... Identifying fish around this structure is going to be near impossible. however in this instance if you have FishID turned on, then the software in the unit should help interperate if any fish are around the rar data blob by indicating a fish icon.

there are a few options that need to be adjusted when using fishid.. more or less the one which says 'Fish ID Sensativity". turn this right down to it's lowest reading so you don't get any false readings. Normally only the bigger fish will be shown on the screen.

    hope this answers your question.

    re map detail
From what I understand the maps for Humminbird and Lowrance have the same detail as they both come from Navionics and are the same price.

Humminbird use different colours to display the maps and are very much easier to view in direct sunlight. At least thats the way I've found it comparing a mates Lowrance LMS527 to my Humminbird 787 and 797

I've seen the Garmin maps on a PC and they seem to have the same detail.
I havn't seen any other brands to compare.

I don't use the fish ID so I can't comment on that.

Hi I have a 797c2 with the navonics gold chart of all of Australia. The detail is pretty good, depth lines, areas that dry at lowtide, channel markers and other nav markers and it also has the green, yellow and other zones in the great barrier reef marine park. The busier the area the more detail it has eg Sydney harbour has more detail than Mackay harbour.

local guy is spot on with the fish id. if you back it off to near 1 then whatever gets displayed on your sounder as a fish id symbol is definately worth looking at. I have heard of guys in the impoundments pulling the fish id back to 1 as there is alot of catfish and crap that they are not interested in. so when they get a fish symbol it means that it is better then average. When you go through a snag it can be hard to identify what is a fish and what isn't, fish id will tell u if there is a fish in there or not just be careful on the fish id sensitivity. Humminbird sounders will definately leave the raw data there even when the fish id is on, not like some other brands. As for charts I think it is a matter of preferance as they are all pretty good but I do like my navionics though
