I was just wondering on saltwater when casting a line how line would you let your line go, that's im saying if you would let the cast go straight to the bottom then reel it up a little bit or would you let your line go for a little bit and just stop it? Also I need help on reeling in big fish, the first time i ever caught a big fish i was reeling it and my reeler broke :| So if anyone would have tips on how to maintain the rod and how to reel in the fish when it's a big one.
Another quick question for using prawns as bait would you rather leave the skin on or peel it off? :/
Thanks
I real it in a little bit mate, just so you don't have the big curls in your line, don't put it really tight though, for using prawns i don't take the shell off, people take it off for trevally and other finicky fish but i catch as much fish with the shell on
mate not sure if your takin the ginger but I will bite anyway. Reel it in a bit to maintain contact with your your gear so you can feel whats happening but when you geta bite wait and let let some line go by either lowering your rod tip or letting more line out but not so much that you can't still feel the fish then when you feel him pick it up and move off strike.
reeling in a good fish lift your rod tip without winding and wind as you lower your rod tip down so there is not too much wieght on your reel without letting the fish have any slck line but it does sound like your reel might of been a big w super cheap job.
as for the prawns I am with chief I don't peel em I just put em stright on
Yep as the lads are saying, take the slack up once it's reached depth, set your drag - thats the knob on the front of the reel spool, so the drag lets the line slip a bit under tension, that takes a bit of feel.
When a good fish is on there is a temptation to tighten the drag up, you need to watch this, you don't want to lose all your line, but neither do you want to break your reel or line, this is an experience thing and over time you'll get the hang of it.
Your local bait and tackle shop or a fishing club in your area should be able to help.
Be patient with it, you'll get the hang of it.
When you get home, wash your reel and rod in some fresh water. Make sure your drag is tight, wipe it off, let the drag off perhaps a light spray of inox or penn rod and reel cleaner and put the rod and reel away for next time.
As for peeling prawns...its a bit like the difference between people who fold or people who scrunch....I peel my prawns, never used to but I just find it seems to present as a better bait that way.
