    Forster / Tuncurry Wallis Lake

    Hi all,

    Does anybody know of a Fishing web site for the Forster / Tuncurry Wallis lake area.
    The social director has decreed that we must visit the area in one of the school holiday times (Damn it)
    and before I cart a boat all the way up there I would like to research the area.

    Any info would be appreciated

    Mate, Forster is a great place for fishing. I used to travel there all the time from Wollongong. I haven't been there for a few years but the lake is responsible for me catching my first ever fish, and some of the biggest estuary species I've caught (bream, whiting and flathead) Autumn was/is the best time of year (for us anyway) for some stonker bream, largest I boated was 40cm. Be sure to go into the local tackle stores and ask around for some top spots. Yabbies and live beach worms accounted for most of our fish, but we always had a poddy mullet or flesh bait out for a bigger flathead or jew at night.

    I can give you a few spot (what the local may call them anyway), but I am not 100% sure on how to get there anymore. One spot is called the "Step" which is basically a big sand plataue that rises from about 5m up to 1-2m depending on tide, we used to fish the far corner (coming from the mouth end) on to of the sand bar about 50m from the big port (red) channel marker, fishing the edges of the bar for bream and flatties and the top accounted for some great whiting.

    Another spot called "the Gate" is across from the step and is a big gap among the oyster leases (these are everywhere and all hold some fantastic bream, luderick and flathead) there are 2 entrances and both are pretty shallow. This spot was our best hotspot for big lizards and bream.

    There are heaps of others that we used to fish but I can't remember how to get to them now, but put my on the lake again and I can take you straight to them. I will have a look at google earth, and if you like can email a screen dump of my favourite spots to you if you like.

    Hi Garry
    Can be a frustrating place to fish in holiday season.Do you know where your staying?If your looking at caravan parks then Great Lakes caravan park is well worth looking at, has its own boatramp or you can leave the boat in the water if you wish.(Just watch out for the light fingered locals with nothing better to do ).
    As far as fishing goes plenty to choose from, osyter leases are always good for bream, while drifting the channels rarely lets you down for a feed of flathead.Mind you if you want to target big bream then early morning is the go, caught a lot of 4 1/2 pound bream between 3 & 5 am.If you want some gps marks then pm me and i'll work some out.

    P.S. Watch out for the pelicans around the cleaning tables, Quick to take the pick of the catch if you turn your back.

    No one specific website that I could find Garry, but these ones should be useful;

    David Seaman apparently writes regular reports on the area in NSW Fishing Monthly. Archive of his reports here;

    And some other sites with good info here;

    There is also an excellent article by Kim Bain about the area on the Seamedia website here;
