    Mooloolaba Calamari

Going to Mooloolaba hopefully this weekend & my son wants to catch calamari as I have seen them being cleaned at the boat ramp.
Is there a season for them? if so when.
Where is the area they are caught, Murphy's shallow/deep which side etc.
Some general hints would be greatly appreciated.

never tried to catch them there, but I would reckon almost anywhere along the Ocean side of the Breakwalls would be a good place to try for them, especially the one on the Mooloolaba side, it has some nice sandy looking patches with some weedy rocks, which is the Squids hunting domain.

I have never fished for them at Mooloolaba before ('cause I don't live there) but I have certainly seen them at the Rockwalls, so I would reckon that you must be able to catch them there, a simple rod/reel, Squid jig, just before dark, maybe a long handled net and I would think you would be on the Money.

Snapp, caught in winter mainly, I have just started to get a few following my plastics up around redcliffe. I have caught them at Murphy's shallow b4 (I think the bright boat light and berly brought them to us), but as others have said they will be around the break walls in close also. they love Weedy banks and rocky areas.

Best bet would be some form of light setup as close to the water as possable at night (use to hang a lantern from the jetty at woody point) and then cast your squid jig out and bounce it along the bottom back to you. keep the jiging going as your lifting it vertical too

    cheers

Nug, If I was to try for them around Noosa I would give that rocky point just inside the mouth of the river a shot this is a guess though as I have never chased them up there.

a great spot for calamari is old woman is. plenty around there, also around the beacon out from mooloolaba and as for land based spots on the sunshine coast, try the boat ramp on the kawana side of mooloolaba and most the jedis in caloundra too

Try close into the rocks southern end of point arkwright at Coolum. The rock platform is pretty safe in winter and land based is ok . Check it out in daylight but start fishing predawn . Use a slow retieve with prawn type jigs.

Any of the bridges at night would be the go as well I would reckon, and anywhere on the waterfront with good lighting as well (near UWW??).

They love to feed in the fringes of the light. This time of year they are always hanging around our pontoon at night. A little bit of close cover, some open water, some bait fish and some light and squid are almost guaranteed to be around.

    Cheers
