Good Day Out on the Broadwater/Nerang!

Hey,

Me and 2 of my mates headed to the broadwater this morning to chase some bream, flathead and whiting in my tinny,
We got there about 7:30- 8am To my amazement the broadwater was almost crystal clear, we trolled around crab island for about 30mins-1hr for 3 undersize Flattys (25(sand),30,(one with weird yellow tail-view pic 2), 38cm dusky),
We then decided to give some Yabbies and Prawns a go and caught plenty more undersize fish and one Legal whiting. Things were going slow so we went and took a dip in the beautiful water,
After that we went to biggera creek and caught and nice 31cm bream, a small tuskfish (i think -photo-) and a flounder about 20cm (how big do they have to be?) and decided to head back up towards the nerang as the boats were moving in (1pm), stopped at Sundale, Sorrento Bridges and picked up a legal bream at both and then headed to my SPOT"X" near my house, after catching only bream about 15cm we were just about to give up when my friend, "Luke" (an unexperienced fisherman), line started peeling off when he states "i think ive got one", after about 5mins of watching him struggle, i called it a big flatty, whereas Tom (coomera-champ101) called it a "duck", but no he was wrong when Luke pulled a nice 68cm (2kg) flathead into the net, which he insisted would go home for dinner.
All in all we ended up with 5 Legal Bream, 1 Legal Whiting and one beautful flathead, much better then a normal monday at school!!!

Just had the Bream and whiting for breakfast, ABSOLOUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!,
Luke got to keep his flathead and im sure he enjoyed it even more then we enjoyed ours!!

fish in the photo is a moon wrasse. pretty common in the seaway. thats as big as they get.

cbs, thanks for that ill let Tom know cause he was curious, good looking fish.

FISHAWN, I tried trolling a few lures but my Jackall DChubby in "shrimp colour" picked up all 3 flattys, they grabbed it pretty aggresively as just after they struck you could see them splashing on the surface. The big flatty caught in Spot "X" was caught on a whitebait and he spat out a fish that looked like it could of been a legal whiting when we netted it!

Lizard Wizard, Sorry about that mate, i have increased the size of the post now and ill keep it that size in the future!

One Question : In the second photo, that flathead had an unusual tail, it had yellow and black stripes down it, can someone inform me into what type of flathead it was, im guessing it was a sand flathead, although ive caught them before and not noticed it?? if it isnt either a dusky or sand, what is the size limit aswell?

Seccond is a bar tail flatty. Not sure of the legal size. Sounds like you guys had fun. Ben

Dylan the flathead is either a sand flathead or a bar tailed legal size 30 cm no bag limit, have a look in the tide guide it has a picture of the 3 types of flathead. cheers wayne.

Side note,, that font it is a bit small and hard to read. The eyes ain't what the used to be.

My mate caught the Flathead on a whitebait, it says in my previous post but i thought id answer you anyway.

Thanks BLOOEY and Youngy but which one is it??

Ive looked on internet it says this about sand flathead,

"Sand flathead also have distinctive tails which are white with oblique black bars." but doesnt mention anything about yellow???

It says this about Bar tailed Flathead, "The tail is bright white, with three distinct black bars crossing horizontally, giving the tail a ‘flag’ appearance. There is a yellow patch on the tail, which is also a distinctive feature of the species."

So looking at this i would say it would be a bar tailed flathead!

Sorry Mate, no gar, sortof had this trip planned for a while and didnt want to change my plans at last minute, i caught a few gar last weekend they are a fun fish and occasionally jump!! maybe some other time!
