i have to agree with dave if u look after a defender itll last u just as long as any other 4wd

also they may well have aluminium panels but check the chassis for rust. not so common in the defender but anything older could pose a problem

also if ur looking at a tdi defender check the water pump gasket for a leak. dad has two defenders and the water pump gasket has gone on both of them, its nothin major just make sure u check the coolant level every fortnight or so
The biggest fault with fenders are the timing belts(TDi MOTOR). If she snaps (which they do) you will stuff your donk.Replaced every 150000kms and youll have no probs.
Just another thing re landies Back in the 80s how many 20+ odd year old series 2 and 3s were still driving HEAPS.its like your fav reel look after it,repair it when it needs it and it will serve you for years.
Buy the way how many 25 year old luxs do you see still moving.bugger all
    Cheers

OOOPS forgot. For such a large bus there is not much space in the drivers side,If your a big bloke youll be up hard against the door.

Just sold my 20 year old Lux, heaps of bush and beach work and never let me down. Buy shares in a seal company if you want to own a landy, I've never seen a vehicle leak so much oil, and yes I do know a number of people who own them.

It's all about quality and consistent build in my opinion, Land Rover just don't have it.

Landie oil leaks are a factory designed thing to stop the chassis rusting
I thought every body knew that

If you want a truck to do beach work then it is pretty pointless putting the poor old hilux up against a Defender . If you put the Landy up against Lancruisers or Patrols at least they would be in the game (a little behind but at least closer )

Landrovers dont leak oil - They mark their territory.

Yeh if my landy wasn't leaking oil it meant it needed a topup LOL
Also the oil stops all the nuts & Bolts from ceasing making repairs easier
