    defender or hilux?

so its time for a new car. i was looking into either a defender or hilux duel cab. i was looking for good interior room because i'm a bigger bloke and still want 5seat without squishing everyone in the back. i wanted to know what the thoughts are of people who know. it will be 2nd hand around 90's. i will be mainly beach use and sometimes forest tracks. i am new to the 4wd thing what is the best mods to get done? lift kit, lockers etc.
edit: also what prices am i looking at
    cheers, adam

redbook and carsales/carpoint/carsguide websites will be help to work out prices. (Google for them if you can't find them).
Sorry, can't really help you on vehicle choice - although I have seen some nice defenders set up really well for beach fishing.

    Re: defender or hilux?

There is no choice between those two, hiluxes are not even slightly in the race. I personally rate hiluxes as one of the least useful vehicles on the road.

Go the Defender all the way in that choice.

    Funny.

If you're going to be completely biased towards a vehicle/brand you need to back it up with some evidence or reasons. Saying "Hiluxes are crap" helps no one.

    G'day

Yes I have, and I had to do cpr on it more times than I can remember. My hilux was honestly the worst car i've owned.

Back to the question, I'm with Jack on this one. For capability, go the defender.

If it's been looked after, like anything, will last you many many moons. Also with the defender being alloy skin, you don't have any worries with rust.

    Re: defender or hilux?

We have two luxes at work and they get the same treatment as the tritons......no comparison between the two. Tritons win hands down. Luxes do not handle the loads near as well as the tritons and they are less enjoyable to drive than the tritons. Luxes have both been getting a lot more intesive services done to keep them on the road and they tend to wear tyres out about 1/3rd as quickly too per km.

Sure puts how I feel about luxes to bed.

hiluxes most likely out sell defenders because of price a new defender is 50 grand for the 130 dual cab, while the 2wd hilux is about 20 grand (sorry might be a bit off but that something like wot it said in the paper)

i have to agree with dave if u look after a defender itll last u just as long as any other 4wd

also they may well have aluminium panels but check the chassis for rust. not so common in the defender but anything older could pose a problem

also if ur looking at a tdi defender check the water pump gasket for a leak. dad has two defenders and the water pump gasket has gone on both of them, its nothin major just make sure u check the coolant level every fortnight or so

    Re: defender or hilux?

Land Rovers are good if you want to become a good home mechanic.

Hilux's well after owning 2, I can honestly say, I knew I shoud not have bought the second one!!!

Jock the Rock, if you are comparing vehicles, at least compare apples to apples.
New hilux 4x4 is very simlar price to the 4x4 landy.

If you are a bigger bloke (like me),I suggest you perhaps look at a 80 series land cruiser if it is in your budget.

yeah sorry bout that i could only find the price of the 2wd model in the paper not the new model 4x4, i just thought that the 4x4 model would be pretty cheap as well. i didnt know the price of the 4x4 version thanks for fillin me in mate.

i agree with u bout the home mechanic bit and also the bit about the bigger bloke my brother is 6 foot 5 and refuses to drive a defender

Tyres on my Hilux (4wd) have done 100,000 k's and there is life in them yet.
So are you saying you would get 300,000 K's out of the same tire on a Triton?
Services, I have done my own services on my Hilux for the past 4 years, one set of front brake pads and a timing belt plus fan belts, less than $200 on parts in 4 years , thats excluding a couple of batteries and lots of oil and filters.
I have owned a lot of cars, only two 4wds, but the Hilux is the best of the them.
I had a Colt and a Magna and swore I would never buy another Mitsubishi.
    So to each their own.
If you don't want to go new try to pick something up at the auctions

    Re: defender or hilux?

Ok mate very different trucks we're dealing with here. If you want 'stock' capability then go with the defender, but it will cost you more initially. For similar money you could buy your hilux and then spend some money on bigger, more agressive tyres, a lift and some other tasteful accessories and then it will totally outperform against the landy.

The other thing to consider is how common they both are. I drive a 4runner (essentially a songle cab lux) and busted a rear tail light. $35 off ebay. Try that with the landy! And mine was brand new.

Servicing costs dont tend to come into it too much. If you use genuine parts they will both cost you. But many aftermarket brands now make very competitive parts that work just as well! I recently rebuilt the whole front end of my bus (inner and outer axle seals, wheel bearings, locknut kit, disc rotors, brake pads) and spent $300 for both sides. Cheap as chips. Service either with good quality fluids avery 5,000 km and they will both do well. Just keep in mind that if anything 'big' carks it on the landy it will cost more.

Finally if looking at defenders make sure you pay attention to rust on the chassis, suspension, brakes etc, as the only aluminium parts are the panels, and many people think they are all alloy and thus you dont need to wash them.

    Hope this helps

My fender 130 would kill your lux any day
The crumple zone 0n a fender is the other vehicle.
Before you say it "thats if its going"
    Go you good things
