    Sealer problems

    Help needed,
Twice just recently when appling a second coat of speed rod sealer to my bindings the sealer has crazed. There was a 5 hour gap between applying coats and the brush was washed in mineral turps between applications. Has anybody had the same problems and is there a solution?
    Regards
    Paul

    Re: Sealer problems

Yep the solution is get rid of it because it is absolute crap and I think there should be a law against selling it (maybe the death penalty or something like that)
If you use it only put 1 coat on because as soon as you put another on its stuffed. I have had it roll itself into little balls of crap when putting on a second coat.
If you ask me it looks and smells like cheap 1950's furniture varnish only worse.
In my opinion out of the all time worst rod building products that Speed Thread Sealer gets a big fat number 1
Did I tell you I don't like it?
There are plenty of good Colour Preservers / Thread Sealers on the market to be using that stuff.
Try the Flex Coat or Swifty stuff they are probably my favourite CP's or even the Pac Bay, Amtak or Gudebrod CP's aren't to bad either.
The old Gudebrod stuff was real good but they had to change that for no good reason about a year or so ago but the new stuff is still good but nowhere near as good as the old Gudebrod stuff.
    Thanks
    Simon

Simon is dead set right. Speed sealer is crap. Take his advice and try one of the CP's he has suggested. I personally used U40 which I find is excellent. I have some older Gudebrod which is also excellent.

    Re: Sealer problems

I didn't even think of the U40 Colour Lock it's not to bad either.
I find the use or a colour preserver / thread sealer is a personal one and every rod builder will probably like something different.
The small 1oz bottles of colour preserver are pretty cheap so what I would recommend is get a few different brands or even as many as you can get your hands on and do some test wraps using different colours and shades of thread that you will being using most of the time and find what one works best for you then stick with that.

    Re: Sealer problems

I think you will find the Speed sealer is thinners based and not turps based.
I only get cloudiness if the humidity is high or if the temp has dropped dramatically in the last two hours.

Speed sealer is not the best product but it does the job for single coat applications.

I generally only ever seal once either per layer of thread or once only if using same colour for two layers.
