i was recently spooled by a mulloway in a south coast estuary the gear i was using was a 6 to 10kg ugly stick with a mitchell predator 600 bait runner spooled with 10kg nylon. what gear do i need to catch a mulloway without getting spooled

are you sure it was a mulloway must of been a brute for him to spool you on that gear I generally only fish 14 pd line in the river for mulloway and have boated fish up to 9 kg only ever been smoked by sharks.
That is an interesting reel robert637;

I have never found a rear drag reel that I have been happy with, even some quality made ones from Shimano and Diawa. Hard to get good drag pressure consistently I have found.
10kg nylon/Mono should be up to it if you have a reel with a good drag. With that rod you could go to perhaps 12/15kg max without overloading it.
