Thread: Heavy Surf Blank

    Heavy Surf Blank

I am looking at putting together a rod to suit an old 7" timber Alvey that I have restored. I am looking at something that will let me throw up to a 10 ball and chunk of Bonito or similar if needed and to suit 10-15kg line class. It will be mainly for my occasional beach trip but may be used off the stones or river walls around the place. I would like something that I can hold for a few hours at a time without needing a harness. Two options that I have considered are extended FSU5120 or a MT8144 but these may be too light. Perhaps a SU 177 blank? Any suggestions would be appreciated

    G'day Horse.
I've found my MT9144 will handle practice casting an 8oz snapper lead better than other, more expensive blanks I own such as the Livefibre Z400.
I use the MT for casting a 10 ball and whole squid/large slab for mulloway in the surf, I cut about 8" from the tip and put an 8" ally tube butt extension on it.
Half the price of the Livefibre Z400, but twice as heavy, rod bucket mandatory!
Needs at least 6 oz total weight to load at all, would probably cast a total weight of 10-12oz, though I haven't tried it.
I think there is a FSU6120 available, supposed to be a beast, I've never seen or used one however.
The Batson SU1569F supposedly casts to 12oz, $270 minus delivery however.
These blanks are advertised as being available form Australia nowadays.
Reputedly a very good blank, I believe Breakaway Tackle USA make some of their surfcasting rods up on it.
Good luck Horse, I will watch this thread with interest.
    Cheers.

I can tell you now the SU1569F is one weapon of a blank 24kg plus and 13 feet long. I dont think Horse wanted a blank that heavy only 10-15kg around 10 feet long. You could try the Pac Bay PBX2 X2GSU100M-2 for $123.70 or a X2GSU100H for $138.55 if you want to go a composite you could try the Super Seeker Ulua 9'3" they are a little heavier but just about unbreakable.

Or the Seeker SJ100L with 5' ULUA extension.

Or American Tackle AXSU100LH if you want a 2 piece.

No need to have blanks weighing half a kilo or having 35mm butt diameter nowadays!

As an alternative, you could rebuild a Penn Spinfisher 11' rodd for the sidecast, 10-15kg 2-6oz, very very light weight and very very ballsy

    Re: Heavy Surf Blank

I thoroughly recommend teh FT162 or FSU5162, i have one which i use with a 7 inch alvey. its probably my favourite rod. It has soo much grunt in the bottom, and can cast anything to the horizon. it isnt as heavy as the SU 7177 either..
I got mine for about 80 bucks which includes a ferrule put on it

    cheers
