Thread: Guide Wear

    Guide Wear

JB dropped a rod around to replace the tip.But on closer inspection I noticed a couple of cracked guides after he left. So took a Marco Pic to show him, under magnification I notice wear grouves on the guide, JB had been using Braid on this rod
These Grouves are not visialbe to the naked eye or feel
So sort of suggest that Silicon guides are the only way to guide for Braid Rods
I have circle the wear area.If ya magnify this pic will get a better view

    Yeh Ian
ya would have to ask JB what he uses it for .But the rod is a 24kg Shimano backbone, and I don't know what Brand type of guides they are using as yet
And if ya willing to pay the price Fuji Silicon guides or the equilalent in the other brands .Diffinately need something harder than a standard Guide

    Re: Guide Wear

A number of your cheap usually chinese no name guides will show signs of wear like that. 90% of the time the guides will be fine and I bet that it is only the tip showing any signs of wear. The tip you are showing looks like a standard aluminium oxide model believe me when I say you dont need silicon carbide for braid any Zirconium guide or tip (at the most) will stand up to any braid if you want to use SIC you can but it is the tip that get 90% of the abuse using braid or any line for that matter. They use Zirconium to line nuclear reactors where the chain reaction takes place so it is plenty strong enough for guides or tips on fishing rods. If you dont believe me get a three point file and go to work on one.

I’m a bit confused as to why the wear is on either side of the ring which in reality should be dead centre. The other point I will make is why the wear is on an intermediate guide and not the tip. Seems very odd to me mate, no real answers sorry.
