    Fish ID Please

    G'day!

I caught what to me was an unknown variety fishing in the Broadwater near Ephraim Island on Saturday. It went 28cm. It was quickly released after a few photos. I cannot find it with these markings in my various books.

What is it's legallength. How does it go on the plate?

    Thanks

    G'Day Ray,
The closest thing i can come up with is a female Blue Tusk Fish. The dorsal is spot on for that species.

    Cheers,
    John.

Looks like a Tuskfish, probably a Blue or a Black Spot. Not a Venus, they have a concave tail, this one is convex.

I have only eaten the Venus Tuskfish which are excellent eating, would imagine these would be the same.

"Tuskfish (all species) 30 min Combined limit of 6 in total for all tuskfish species"

    Cheers

    Thanks!

It had separate teeth. Long thin blue teeth (top and bottom) with quite a gap between.

Looks like a purple tuskfish(grass parrot). Usually caught inshore, have caught plenty on the inshore reefs at Hervey Bay.

Quality is still delivering long after you have forgotten the price.

With the convex tail, it is the grass tuskfish, Choerodon sephalotes.

    G'day!

Thanks forall the info. I will settle for the grass or purple tuskfish, Choerodon Cephalotes.

So as a tuskfish the minimum is 30cm and bag of 6 (as against 25cm and 5 for a parrotfish).

It is only academic but are bag limits are per person or per boat? (Its a goal for me not a limit).

    Thanks for all the help.

    Per person.

"A take and possession limit is the total number of fish a person may take or possess at any one time."
