Moses Perch ... Legal Length/Limit

Hi All
I seem to think a legal MP was 30cm but can't find it on the DPI chart. Have I missed it or does it go under a another name? Moses Perch is what I'm after not Fingermark. Hope someone can help me out.

they are listed under the general title of sea perch;

All tropical snappers and sea perches 25 min 5 per species

Last week I was at South West of Peel and caught quite a few of them using pilchard....not a bad little fighter either....they were around the 27-29cm mark - so I put them back until someone pointed out that legal is 25cm....next time I might hold onto a few and see what they are like to eat - never eaten one before.....

They are very nice on the tooth rbf, well worth it if they have a little bit of size about them. Close relative of the Mangrove Jack. They are aggressive little buggers like their red cousins.

Great eating fish and we get them to 50cms up 1770 way.

from "moses perch" aka " lutjanus rusellii"


My book says discernable k9 teeth and 14 or 15 spines on the moses.

I've only ever caught 2

1 at Cleveland which I could safely assume was a russell.
the one in townsville I could not say and I didn't know enough to bother looking at the time.

how do you manage in practice.

No size limit on moses perch in NSW but a bag limit of 5.

yep, they sure do. i was pulled up by fisheries recently at wello point, while on the water. just doing random inspections. everything was sweet, but they quized me on the size of my 5 moses perch, all of which were 26+ and informed me that they need to have the fin cut. I even had a sticker on my boat with info on that, but i did not think these fish fell under that catagory. they were very good about it and were more willing to educate than hand out a fine.

Legal size is 25cm. I catch them all the time on the gold coast and I've also caught a couple in Bulimba Creek. They do put up a fight especially around snags.
