    Broadwater Thurs nite

The night was looking pretty average after just a few small bream on the runin tide. I threw some HBs at pylons, and not a touch. When the tide started to runout, it wasn’t much better, but at 1.30am I felt a solid hit on a butterflied herring not far from a rocky canal wall. The drag was set on light to medium for bream and line just peeled off zzzzzz…….OK, Im gonna leave the drag on light and be cautious. Right away I thought , big mistake, as he made a run for cover in the rocks. I could feel him darting a foot or 2 above the bottom, looking for a cavern to hide in, and I thought, this is not a jack, but hes a solid fish. Maybe a big flatty? Ive got a new rod, and it gave me some good control, a Starlo Stix Maxispin Tournament 4-7kg. This is a nice way to open the account, as long as I can land it. After that I put a little touch more drag on, but still kept it light as he made 2 more runs over the next 5 mins. Finally we see some color and hes a nice cod! 62 cm is a pb for me and Im stoked, and hes released into the esky.

I then saw he was hooked above the lip, and just thru about 1mm of skin only, no bone to support any weight, and if I had have wound the drag up any more, the hook would have just broken the skin and popped out!! Lucky I played him cautiously after all. Not much else for the night, the best bream went 800gm.

    cheers

Thats a nice cod and a great way to break in your Max Spin. I picked one up a few weeks ago and am very impressed with it.

Nice fish Andrew - the Cod are fairly reliable when the more favoured species don't want to play. Cod for dinner earns you another leave pass from the boss
