Hi Craig
Try your nearest tackle shop most of them do rod repairs and could change the guide for you.
If they dont do rod repairs themselves I am sure they could put you in touch with someone that could.
I have a 13’6 Live Fibre surf rod that I was wanting to have a guide changed on. The bottom guide is a standard guide and i was looking at changing it to the large one’s used on most surf rods, for use with an Alvey reel. Is this something that someone here could help me with or if not could some one recommend a place to get this done. Looking at the quality and finish of the rod it is not something I would look at doing myself without the right gear and experience. If any one can help I’m in the Caboolture area.
Thanks Craig.

are you going to be using a side cast with the rod?? It sounds like you intend to.
I've never built a surf rod to suit an Alvey, but you will certainly need to change the butt guide to accommodate the loops of line when casting an Alvey.
Could you give the measurement from the middle of the reel seat to where the first guide is currently placed.

Hi Roz, from the middle of the reel seat to the middle of the first guide is 1500mm, Yes i am wanting to use an Alvey on the rod and have had issues with the line looping around the smaller guide.
Thanks Craig
Hi Craig,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you.
the distance between the centre of a reel seat and the butt guide may be around 53" or 135cm... that is only a rough guide. A purpose built rod using a side cast reel, has the seat right down the butt end of the rod, I don't know where you present reel seat is situated, you may have to shuffle things around perhaps.
I am a bit out of my comfort zone trying to give advice on this type of set up, but I hope I've given you some idea. Would pay to look at an 'off the shelf' set up just to be sure. As for replacing the guide, you will find that is not very difficult, just take care getting the old resin off. Most tackle shops should stock the correct size guide and some thread, you will quite possibly be able to match the colour already on the rod, if that's what you want.
good luck with the project.
cheers roz.
