    Stealing GPS Marks

Just wondering on people thoughs about stealing people's X Spots.

A good example would be, I go out the seaway and head towards a few boats that are anchored. Come to about 50 meters of them then mark it on the GPS.

Peolple don't anchor there for no reason? now would they?.

probably one of the lowest acts one could do. But it happens every day of the week.

I personally find it a funny old mentality.

How do you know that they aren't anchored there cause they saw someone anchored there last week, who saw someone the week before, who saw some one the month before haul in a fish (when in actual fact they were just cleaning it before they got back to the ramp).

I might, if there was a large group of boats and i didn't know the area, go and have a look at what sort of ground they are fishing to see what shows on the sounder. But unless it looks good on the sounder i wouldn't put it in the GPS.

Thats how 90% of people get their marks.
If it is their secret spot they don't want anyone else fishing it , they wouldn't be anchored there in the middle of the day.

I think people can go wherever they like. I have never taken anyone’s “spot”. But how do you know they did not know about it before you. I think some people take these things very seriously, a bit too seriously. No-one owns any particular piece of the sea.

The reason I say this is I have seen people anchored on what I thought was my spot X. Then I realised that a lot more people knew about it than what I thought.

I remember once I was searching for a wreck that I had on my GPS. While I was searching for the wreck a guy was parked in the vicinity, he screamed out that I was stealing his spot. After a long laugh I told him that I was searching for a wreck that I have been to heaps of times. He said that he thought no one new about it other than him.

    Happens fairly frequently.
Also there is much more than knowing where the spot is you also have to know the correct tides, moon phase, bait, and other techniques etc.
Someone is fishing spot X and they lift their anchor and drift off it when you approach and then get quite shorty when you pull up on the spot.
I think that it would be quite rare for a spot X to be known to one person only.
Some of the spot X,s i have been told about were given out in the old Telegraph fishing guides. Only thing different is that they now have gps marks instead of the old marks which began with line up the tip of mcleay with pine tree on such and such.
    Cheers

    Possessive lot aren't we?

The botom line is - nobody has rights to any piece of the ocean above any body else. .

If you see a group of boats anchored and mark it on your GPS to check it outy later - there is nothing wrong with that. Fact is if there is a group of boats there it is certainly NOT a secret spot now is it?

I can imagine guys who follow charter boats around would not be viewed to kindly, though - just ask Smithy - I am sure he has a few stories to tell and a few snapper to throw.

Your "spot X" is going to be unoccupied most of the time anyway.

So let's say i am driving along and come up to a mark that I know is somebodys.........shhhh........"secret spot". Nobody is there, but I think to myself - "Oh, that is so and so's spot - I better not fish there!......Give me a break

    Re: Stealing GPS Marks

I want radar with chartplotter overlay so I can ping em right down to the X on the side from 600m and at 30knots.

Bit rich motoring up to a single boat fishing and saving their spot, but if 2 or more boats then what's the problem it's obviously a common knowledge fishing spot unless a couple of mates fishing a shared spot x.

50m is too close anyway, 100 minimum unless it's a known spot where they pack in tight for a fish.

    cheers fnq

I think there are a number of people that actually think that they own a piece of the ocean/bay.
