Summer Vs Winter Whiting

I have been reading the reports and post about whiting of late, and for the life of me what is the difference between a summer and a winter whiting, besides the obviouse you catch one is summer and the other in winter. Characteristics/ body shape/ shades in colour???

could someone please post a pic of the two side by side to show the difference. Because when I catch a whiting I go, O goodie a whiting, measure it if 23 and below release back, if 23 and over release into the eksy for a dinner date.

summer grow bigger than the winter plus i beleive the summer fight harder. plus the summer look better they don't have those little black dots on the side of them.

Hey Ive got a picture of both below, I believe you can catch both all year round though??, anyone correct me if im wrong, im almost definet you can catch summer whiting all year round, not positive on winter whiting though, anyways hope this helps! I think the summer whiting are distinct because of their yellow fins.

just to add to the confusion there are another two species that i know of the northern whiting which has a convex tail. there are two sorts of"summer whiting" one being the sand whiting and the other is the golden lined. both of which are more prevelant during winter/spring than summer. if you do a image search they both look different to a winter whiting. the winters have large distinct darker blotches on them. hope this helps. chewy..........

We catch both species all year round in the Great Sandy Straights but in Summer, the winteries are a bit scarcer and in deeper water. Summeries are thin all year round but I think that is more to do with the pros flogging them out.

They were there 2 weeks ago.

but little fish are sweet.

i generally tell by the colour, winteries are real grey and tatty looking and summeries are generally larger and a better looking fish with yellow in the lower fins. they both taste tops on toast.

Thanks for the replies guys, it has made it a bit clearer for me, I am just thinking back to the whiting I have caught and can picture the two one with the yellow fins and the other with the the greyish dots.

winter are to small?

I have quite often caught winter whiting over 30cm...is that too small?

I usually rely on the darker blotches of the winter whiting to tell them apart as well.

A bit patchy on the Amity banks today. We managed a feed, about 30 keepers in the end, but a lot of throw backs. Prawns and squid strips were the bait.
