Took my family for a few day School Holiday camp on the lower Mary River and was joined by my folks who travelled down from Bundaberg to camp with us for a day.
Kids loved it, as did I as it reminded me very much of my youth and family camping trips on the (then) beautiful lower Burdekin River in north Queensland. Fishing quarry on the Mary was primarily bass (plus heaps of catties to keep the kids occuppied) - also saw lot of lungfish and turtles and mega tonnes of mullet - would like to explore the lower reaches more for the elusive freshwater barra too one day.
Bass were patchy - heaps of great looking snags appeared to hold none then when we did find them there were usually a school hanging on the one snag. Size class of fish was generally large and the absence of smaller sized fish made me think that most of the fish we were encountering were impoundment escappees and that natural bass recruitment in the Mary is pretty well shagged coutesy of the barrage and loss of brackish estuarine zone - sure was a beautiful place to be though!
Regards and tight lines - Jim
