I am looking to purchase a handheld VHF radio. I would like something small, waterproof and durable. It is something that I will keep in my pocket incase I find myself in the drink watching my boat drive off into the distance.
I have had a look at an ICOM IC-M72 which seems pretty good. Has anyone had any experience with these, or can you suggest something better?
Also without wanting to re-open the buy local v buy online debate, I am getting sick of paying so much to buy locally. The above radio is $499 at Whitworths, and about $170 US dollars online. Grrrrr.
G'day Nautilus,
Have Heard Good Things About The Raymarine 101e, 5 Watts Of Power, Triwatch And Ipx7 Has Own Batterypack And Charging Station! Might Be Worth A Look!
Mate, I have a Ray 101e as back up & use it in my tinny also. Have only used it once offshore at Wide Caloundra for a test to Mooloolaba Coast Guard with no problem.
What I like, it has no battery pack but runs off AA batteries much cheaper. Use rechargeable batteries & charge it off its supplied battery charger, otherwise a flick of a switch & you can use normal AA batteries.
Have had a couple of hand held radios in the past all were good but I don't like the cost of having to replace the battery packs when they need to be replaced, hense the Ray 101e.
Bought mine at Whitworths about three years ago during a boat show when they had the 15% boatshow discount. Cheers.
