hi i am going up to straddy soon and they said if i throw out a live tailor i am in with a chance of a jewie. so my question is what pound mainline do i need and how much of it? What size hooks and leader( does it have to be wire or will mono or fluorocarbon do)? is it wise to burley? all that info and more will be much appreciated.

I would use 30-40lb main line depending on size of bait and fish targeting, 6/0 circled hooks should be fine and as a leader I would say 60lb Mono will do or 50lb it's really dependant on bait and fish as I have said before.

Keech, 10kg line is ample, 10/0 gamakatsu octopus suicide hook, single in a livie or a pair snooded for a slab bait.
Sinker to suit the conditions, above a 350-400mm trace of 80-100lb mono in case a greenback takes a bite!
Rod between 12' and say 13'6", that will effectively cast the totalweight of bait and rig.
Live tailor or mullet or slab of either, which may be easier to use.
Back-up bait of squid or beachworms, you will need a different hook set up for worms.
Oh and 250 metres would be plenty for the great majority of jew.
Personally I wouldn't burley, would only bring the vermin around!

It really depends on what sort of fishing you are doing, and how you are equipping your self. 20 lb line will handle a big jew in the surf as long as you have quick reflexes and a large spool capacity. I use 30lb for the rocks and the surf, with a 14 foot fast taper, heavily built rod. for leader material use mono, and heavy stuff, like 60 or even 80 pound schneider. i gang 6/0's together, but im upgrading the sizes next time.
the biggest problem if you are jew fishing from the stones is landing the fish, a gaff is preferable. Ive heard of guys down south using 100 lb line and stopping big jew dead in their tracks and skull draging them out of the water.

Mate if its your first time jewfishing go for 30lb mono. It will be alot easier to handle a big fish in the breakers with 15kg. If you can find a gutter that feeds straight out to sea that will be your best bet.
mustad 4180's arent a bad hook or even better, black magic in 9/0 Lb. Brilliant hooks. I think the black magics are approximately $5 for a pack of 2, but you won't be expecting to lose many off the beach so its a cost well worth spending to assure you dont bend or snap hooks.
If you're going to weigh it down, which would be a good idea if theres any swell around then hook the bait towards the tail.

Dont worry about wire ( only if you want to land the sharks!) .... I've never been bitten through on a Jew ..... & I've caught several 100s ( a flattie will do more damage on leaders)
Hooks ..... 6/7 Os & incorporate a stingerAttachment 25321 ( you can use this for both live bait & fillets)
Burley .... can be used ( but be prepared for sharks) ..... If the jew are there .. they will move through the gutters!
Also dont forget the humble beach worm ...... many a jew has fallen to them

I'm not sure what you call it ...... I started using it when I wanted to eliminate crimps in Jinkai when fishing for yellowfin tuna ( cubing)
Its formed like a uni knot without the twists
Alls I know that it works & you can use it on up to 200lb mono with no dramas!

Nagg thats the knot i use for all my heavier leaders. Just an overhand knot, then past it through the eye of the hook, bring your end back through the loop made by the overhand knot and make a few turns inside the loop. Impossible to explain right but works brilliantly!
Keechie, just remember, its not a bream or trevally or flatty, its a big bulky fish that you must tire out and be prepared to put some pressure on. Don't let it have 2kgs of drag if you feel you could put 3, 4 or even 5kg (without going overboard of course).
Make sure you're confident in your knots and rigs and above all, give it time. the fish will come through most gutters, its just a matter of waiting and giving a few tactics a try. If tailor doesnt come up trumps then try 2 or 3 large beach worms on a 3/0 or 4/0 longshank hook that are threaded up the line.
i have full faith in my knots just often i struggle with my line to leader, can you suggest one that is worthy of 5 kilo's of drag?
My Bcf Shopping list:
*Some more soft plastics
*8/0 and 9/0 black majic hooks
*3/0 and 2/0 long shank hooks
*60lb flurocarbon leader as i have heavier mono at home
luckily i have learnt how to tie some knots off the internet and out of a few books so that can advantage me when tieing the 2 hook rig.

a great braid to mono knot is the albright knot and the bimini twist, the bimini
twist is difficult, better to prepair at home b4 you go fishing,

In my opinion flurocarbon leader is a huge waste of money. If you use something like 60-80 lb schneider ,a jew wont bite through it, and its is very abrasion resistant. It doesnt cost much either. In the surf, you don't have to be as nit picky about what fish will and wont see as opposed to if you were fishing with plastics.
Also, if you want to join to bits of line together, use an albright knot or a double uni knot. Otherwise a swivel will do.
What sort of surf rod are you going to use, and will you fish off the beach or the rocks??

i will fish both tocks and the beach but probably more the ebach and there is only usually a little bit of swell.

I'd use a swivel between the mainline and the leader Keechie, especially with the rockin and rollin your bait will receive when fishing from the beach.
