A quick report from this mornings events.
Woke at 6.30 to get the boat ready and all my gear together and pick up Taipan, my deckie for the day to be on the water by 9 only to be greeted by next to no wind, so it was a rush job. Stopped in at the tackle store to get a few metals as mackeral were the target of the day. Rang Tiapan to tell him we're going a bit earlier and I was pciking him up in 10 minutes.
Got the the ramp and launched with only 3 other car and trailers in the carpark, looks lke the wind predictions had scared everyone off, good news for me. Pulled out of ross creek by 8.30 and headed to on of the markers.
First marker was no good, so onto the second for a repeat performance, the third yeilded one small doggy (roughly 30cm) and a second drift was done to try and enice his bigger brothers and sister's, but to no avail. Wind was just starting to pick up, making it easier to pick drift lines so all was well.
4th marker we had a couple of hits and spat hooks over a couple of drifts, so frustrated we moved to the next, where Taipan boated his first for the day, a 40cm doggy. A coupe more drifts past that marker and the wind started to pick up some more, so we decided to work our way back in, revisiting all the previous markers.
After a couple of follows from some big grey macks, things were looking up follows by hoards of tiny trevally that we had trouble getting the slices past. Ac couple of hits, spat hooks and I finally hook up on the first keeper, a 52cm doggy, throat cut and in the esky (finished eating it 1/2 hour ago, very yummy).
Taipan has his slice thrown at him by another big fish and things slowed a bit, so we headed in a little closer. I hooked up on something decent after mistaking the hook up for being wrapped around the prop then the marker, as the drift was a little close for comfort and we had to putt forward a little, when the fish goes on a good run, yes I thought, I'm finally on to a good fish, Taipan gets the video camera out to tape the "battle" when the bloody thing spat the slice, I never found out what it was, but I think it was a good mack I was tied to.
A little dissappointed, we head closer and closer in, eventually giving up the game and heading home at about 11.00. Stopped by the water police on the way in for a safety gear check and to put me on the bag and a bit of a chat, but geez they would've had a very easy day, I wonder if they keep a rod or 2 on board for days like this.
