    Cubes and Engine Weight

    Team,

Assuming we compare apples to apples with everything same (hull type, laden weight, sea condition, driver, new 4 stroke engines, etc.). I want to compare 2 different outboards - and ignore price point:

A - When compared to 'B' : 30% more cubic capacity and 30 kg heavier
    B - When compared to 'A' : 30% less cubic capacity and 30kg lighter

Would the extra weight of 'A' negate the effect of increased cubic capacity - when comparing 'B' in terms of thrust?

    Splash,

    CUBES RULE

There is no substitute. More cubes equals more grunt/balls and an engine that doesn't have to work as hard. Although with turbo charging and supercharging that sort of muddies the water a bit....

I don't think the extra 30kg would have that much effect. But the 30 cubes sure would.

    Cheers

Engine weight is a red herring, as in power to weight, the differences as a ratio are inconsequential in our marine engines, weigh matters as lighter may and usually does suit a typical boat design better but in power to weight, once the the boat as above is gutted to as light as possible with the engine running a surface piercing prop with speeds right up there it will come into play.

We are all boat setup meatheads us fisho's, with fishing rigs, large wetted areas, heaps of hull weight, even Daz with the big flashy V is still a meathead cause it's on a typical fishing rig.

    cheers fnq

Thanks - am i reading into these responses that more cubes will in fact override and overcome any extra weight penalty on the block ?

yep but more cubes working in light conditions will use slightly more fuel eg trolling its very much like a pendulum one side torque v fuel consumption.

    Hi Splash

Power is nice as long as the boat can carry the extra weight hung on the transom and you don't exceed to plated power max.

Mind you, you can create a dog by hanging too much on its tail.

If your thinking of yours then work out the difference between what you have and what you are contemplating and add the extra weight to the tail of yours to check how it sits and if yours still goes, to also see how it runs with the extra kgs.

Still wouldn't hurt to get the motor you can get the best service for or that you only need to do basic checks on for 3yrs and probably you will have moved back to civilization by then and be the owner of all sorts of goodies.

    Cheers

ta - yes weight is probably the most important criteria in the end...
