    Yes definitely a conspiracy!!.
My suspicions were confirmed when I saw Elvis hiding behind a grassy knoll.
He looked as if he were trying to communicate with aliens with his Epirb.

I have to wonder if SatNav really does understand why then new epirbs are dearer than the older ones. So far I am yet to hear a plausible reply.

You (satnav) must have a motive behind your question.......
I ask (if I may) what that motive is?????

If the label says "Made in China" then of course the cost is a conspiracy! I often get pricing sheets for various electronics and power tools from major brands which show just how much some of these tools are made for in China. The markeup on some of them is comparable to jewellry!

But of course, you have to consider the cost of a life, and whether made in China or not, if the thing works and saves a life, then money is definitely no factor! But we shouldn't be ripped off on this factor alone, if it is indeed the case.

i'll tell u why they are so expensive.

They know that as of next year everyone who has the older style ebirb has to throw them away and buy a new one.

Because of this they are charging a bucket load because they know people HAVE TO buy a new 406mhz one. Legal way of Get-Rich-Quick.

There ya go SatNav. i've kept it nice and simple for you so even you can understand basic logic.. I would like to hear your justification as to why they are so expensive.

    1. No motive apart from separating this subjct from the post it was raised in

    2. I would suggest the current 406 Epirb is much better value for dollar than the defunct 121.5 model ever was?

    3. When compared to the 121.5 and based on capability, response, coverage and overall savings the 406 would/should not be classed as expensive at all

For Local Guy & all the other conspiracy theorists......................................bel ow is a link for a US 406 EPIRB. Base model, no GPS function. And as we all know, most stuff is cheaper in the US. But EPIRBs are not mandatory on offshore boats in the US. The US price is $499.99, approx A$540. I purchased my new GME 406 from Glascraft for under $400 a few months ago. I did not purchase from the US because of registration problems & the PRICE. GME make their gear here & are their own agents, so there is no middleman to inflate the price.
So if you are going to mouth off, at least have some facts to back yourself up.

Thanks JB, u just gave me an idea. The missus always complains that she cant contact me becuase i dont get mobile reception where i fish and that she worries about me. I wonder what the reaction of the missus will be when she unwraps a nice new epirb, hahaha

Seriously, the cost does not come into the equation - money well spent

    I totally agree.
I really don't understand some of you guys.
When I'm sitting alone in my tinny at night on the edge of the shelf 70 km's from land the $4oo bucks I paid for my epirb seems very insignificant.

As I posted in the other thread, I purchased a 406 epirb in Nov 04 for $600, why, because of it's improved locating ability compared to the 121 type [plus the knowlege of the impending demise of the 121]
In Nov 04 they were new to the market, I think I had to wait a month to get delivery.
Now 2.5 years later, almost at the point where the 121 will be useless and their price has dropped below $400, Sorry I can't see any price gouging.

It is a far, far better thing to have fished and lost, than never to have fished at all.
