Thread: Sounder going thru VHF

    Sounder going thru VHF

I have tried to fix this problem but to no avail even running another separate lot of wires from my second battery up the other side of my bottom so not to coincide with the transducer wires but is still going thru the VHf any idea's apart from moving the 2 units well away from each other?

Have you tried a ferrite choke?

You say you are still getting feedback thru the radio even though you are operating from different power supplies? Now that is odd, you got me stumped.

Does the feedback occur when your ignition is off as well as on?
Just wondering if it could be power spikes from your motor charging your battery??
Can you fit a filter on the power supply to the radio??

I can't see the noise generated from a transducer being picked up by the radios aerial so therefore i am assuming its electrical feedback somehow.

thanks guys this is while motor is off tried running the wires yesterday then turned it on both units same thing, because when i'm out fishing i can't here distant calls theru the VHF.
the sounder and Vhf are probaley 300 mm apart

    ferrite choke???????
i have choked my ferrit alot does that count?

Have you got much wire left on your transducer cable?
If you have, coil it up in a tight coil, zippy tie the cable in its coil to hold it in form. Then try again. Its a long shot on what I am thinking, but you never know eh?!

    Re: Sounder going thru VHF

I was going to say coil up any remaining aerial wire and do a similar thing.

How close is the Radio aerial wire to the Sounder unit.

One other thought, can you easily remove the radio and try it solo away from the boat?? It is possible it is in the radio alone. you have already separated cables and power supplies so maybe its a faulty radio?

seperate your wiring run your transducer cables away from your radio cables esspcially the incomeing areail cable. Induction from the transducer cables will induce noise into your radio you can also try putting a filter into the arial cable for the radio but first I would try and seperate the cables. Failing that ya gunna have to move one or the other or just put up with it

When all else fails try to wrap the all of the transducer cable that is in close proximity to the radio coax in alfoil and then connect that to the earth connection on the boat. This will provide a shield to any stray emmissions from the sounder in the same way as a metal shed will stop you using a mobile phone in it.

This is a fix that worked for me when the commander phone system we installed in the telephone exchange in Exmouth many years ago was causing mobs of interference to the cops VHF vehicle radio as they approached the cop shop that is next to the exchange building - wrapped alfoil around the cable from the commander box to the distribution box and connected that alfoil to the earth connection of the building - stopped the interference immediately

does your VHF aerial have a grounding plate to suit a fibreglass boat? Check condition of the whip for cracks.

    Re: Sounder going thru VHF

    jtpython,
I would suspect you have a bad earth, probably for the radio but could be the sounder. If you can't find a sus earth (or minus) connection it could be a problem with the shielding on your transducer cable, very hard to check this as ther is no way to verify short of opening the cable insulation (I am assuming that the transducer cable is shielded-it should be). If possible connect a known good transducer as a test to see if your problem disappears, do not connect / disconnect the transducer cable with power on.
I would strongly recommend that you do'nt use a ferrite suspressor. they have a bad habit of introducing damaging spikes into the power supply.
You could always reffer to an old post of mine under the topic "Voltage spike protection" it involves a capacitor across the power supply- very cheap & effective but you should not be having the trouble if your wiring & eqipment are not faulty.

Mine does the same thing, i've got used to it, king of interesting because i have no am/fm radio on board, keeps a nice steady beat, not none of that doof doof doof stuff
