what did ya use as bait. good report
Hi All!
Well it's been a while since i've posted but not having a computer (with the correct photo software) for over 6 weeks didn't help. I also thought i'd save it all for one post...
This year with the bay being very ordinary to date, i decided that i would spend some time in the estuaries learning the finer art of whiting fishing. Now, ok, some will say that it's not as much fun as hauling in a pinkie on light line, but they taste so bloody good that, well i just couldn't get enough of them! My appetite for them has driven me to want to learn as much about them as i could possibly fit in to date! Before i go on, i must sincerely thank 3 fellow AF'ers who can only be considered guru's at this art - their imparting of advice, knowledge & tips has been bloody sensational and i can't thank them enough! For various reasons, they shall remain anonymous , but you gentlemen know who you are and i sincerley thank you !
The area's i fished were the Pin, Nerang (1st time) & Tweed rivers (1st time). Regardless of how much info you receive, you still have to put it into practice - and this is where i had mixed success! Nonetheless, i didn't return home from a single trip without a feed at least - and obviously, some trips were more productive than others. I certainly have plenty of base now to hit the ground running at the end of the bay pinkie season and further the knowledge and practice. The biggest whiting caught was 36cm (yet to crack my PB of 39cm from a few years back that in hindsight was pure fluke) but the potential is there for next summer hopefully. Nonetheless, below are a few highlights of some the trips and some selected pic's (didn't take pic's of every catch).
Highlights:
TINN breaking his toe on the boat ramp before he'd even stepped into the boat to begin an overnighter at the Pin. I offered medical assistance but he was reluctant to swim back to Jacobs Well from the Pin Bar .
TINN (again) - his secret spots at the Tweed were a gem! They were so secret that even the fish didn't know where these spots were... I believe you mate, i really do (NOT)!
Your truly not practicing what i was preaching! Here i am telling Chris (BAYFISHER) to call for the net with the larger whiting. What do i do, go the lift on a fairly decent one and plonk! Straight back in! It was 4.30am though...
Overnighter at the Pin - 5.45pm start fishing - 8.00pm run out of pillies with 16 Tailor in the bucket - 8.15pm begin fishing for whiting - 6.30am leave for home with 16 tailor & 4 whiting! Yay! Could have gone home at 8pm and had a decent nights sleep!
Sal getting the sh%ts with me catching a whiting on the 1st cast at the start of every drift (in a hot session). Finally, he hooks one up before me and winds like mad to get it in - while in the meantime i've hooked too. He goes to lift it in and plonk, off it goes! Being the considerate person that i am, i gave him a close look at my whiting so he could see what the one he dropped looked like...
Smerdo netting a top muddie - well attempting to anyway! I swear he knocked it on the head so hard with net that by the time it got back to the bottom, it would have been unconscious! Tried to console me by telling me it was probably a Jennie!
Ultimately, all trips were very enjoyable, even the solo ones!!! Now for that bay pinkie (with a big knob hopefully)... Nearly forgot what a SP looks like!
Take Care

figjam
Enjoying the art of Ting fishing was a better option to pinkie chasing T, I can almost guarantee it. Now that you are back to the Pinkies, maybe the fish will oblige you and play ball - you have'nt missed much.

Yea I reckon the Tings were a better option this summer. The shallow reefs have been rather quiet. Hopefully some bigger fish will be around soon

Well done T1, your strategy in summer has been paid off with good result...
Now you'll need your secret weapon (Know what's it ) to hunt pinkies...
Great report T1. Some nice feeds of summeries there. They are a great little fish to catch and the fine, white, sweet flesh makes them very popular. Not my favourite eating fish - I prefer something a bit 'fishier' tasting, but my wife loves them, so I still have an excuse to chase them now and then. Good to see you back again
Cheers Freeeedom
NUGG, blood worms was the bait used (with some Chemical Ali worms to help conserve the livies)... Top half of shank C/A's, bottom half livies.
I agree guys! The weather is so unpredictable during this time of year that i plan to stick with the estuaries from Dec - Mar from now on. The good thing about this is in the main, these spots are not weather dependant. Which means you can get out more often.
F/DOM, i must admit that both my wife and i have a fettish for whiting - i rate them as my most favourite fillet - you just need a few to make a meal!

I think we all had to make do with some ordinary wheather all through summer and the lack of grey fish with spots , we had to make do .Looks like some great sessions there mate and some nice tings. Heres to winter and some future good fish; Cheers
Great Post T1
Beautiful catch there mate,i hope one of my whiting fishing experiences will be like that one
Regards
Dylan
Good work T , if you run out of whiting heads for snapper bait the whiting will still be there just further up river. cheers wayne.
Thanks guys!
REMO - Trust me, the whiting population is still well & truly safe (till next summer anyway!)!
CHIEF - i see why you stick to the river!
CHIEF 1 - regardless of their fighting (lack of) qualities, it is still a buzz to put a feed together. Totally different fishing to the pinkies, breambo's & tailor... Hope you get some sooner rather than later!
YOUNGY - if i use all the whiting heads i've gathered in the freezer, i'm going to have some stonker posts this winter! Gee though, i'm rather tempted to get back down there for some more learning experience! I'm really hooked on these little 'tings'!

What about macks? One bad season in weather and you have run away to the estuaries! You fluked a spanish in the bay last year and still yet to catch a spottie?? I could be wrong on that.
Anyways, you should take up poker as you read the opponents pretty well this year and come up with the rewards. Well done. I on the other hand am a bit slow off the mark just got some decent light gear myself and refurbished some old stuff to get into the estuary fishing a bit more. It pays to have insurance in the tough times.
