Those of you who know me, know that i am a Peter Faust addict, making the 13 hour trip (one way) a couple of times a year.
Several years ago i was at Faust and cyclone Larry was bearing down on the coast. On the Saturday morning, Jan came down from the office at Camp Kanga with a cyclone threat map that she had just printed off the computer, the map showed that the cyclone was expected to cross the coast between Bowen and Mackay.
After a short discussion we decided to get out of the area while we could and have a look at Awoonga on the way back down the coast.
We arrived at Awoonga Camp Ground mid afternoon, , total mayhem, people everywhere, tents pitched along the side of the road, you could not swing a cat anywhere , we decided to have a look at the ramp, , again just could not believe the volume of boats, trailers and the way some were conducting themselves on the ramp .
I said to my offsider, let's get out of here, we will come back when the Barra get educated, as the wind was blowing around 30 knots we decided not to bother with Monduran this time and go home.
Last year at the Faust Dam Invitational i met Dr Awoonga, who suggested that i give Awoonga a try, yeah i said i'll think about it
Anyway a couple of weeks ago after several messages from Dr Awoonga i decided to take the trip
Arrived on the afternoon of 31/03/08, rang Trev and said i'm here, hang on he said i'll be there.
Down to the ramp, what a change, hardly anybody around, this is better i thought, great, out on to the lake, What a magnificient body of water with Castletower as the back drop
Tour of lake followed with stops to fish a few locations, now this was to be a trip with a difference, as i had only caught 1 Barra previously on plastic, you see i am a hardbody nut, i decided to persist with the plastics and who better to get the lead from? At the end of the first day i had caught my first Awoonga Barra, and on plastic
Day 2, Trev arrives with a great seating set up for me, as i can not stand up for more than 10 minutes at a time due to a bad back, this of course can be very frustrating at times, however, i had to be careful not to lean a particular way or i could end up in the drink, kind of like an ejection seat
Saw a lot more of the lake, got my first metre Lake Awoonga Barra, thanks Trev, plus a few more, great day.
Day 3, saw a lot more of the lake, Brolgas, brumbies, what a magnificent place and of course more Barra
What i must say here is that i found the fish in the 80 and 90 cm size pull that much harder than similar sized fish i have caught at Faust and elsewhere, bloody amazing and some of them fight dirty, they know just where the boat is a keep driving under it. Another great day in paradise.
Day 4, we revisited a few of the places that we had previously fished, got up real close to a mob of brumbies, some foals, these are beautiful looking horses, not like the scraggy ones that used to be on Moreton Island.
On this day i noticed that a lot of bait fish were carrying a white fungal spot, (similar to white spot in aquarium fish), maybe Johny M or Jas W can let us know what it is? Perhaps it has something to do with the decomposing vegetation? Water quality?
Of course more Barra with Trev leading the way, was he on fire or what? .
To round off the report we got Barra every day even though the conditions were less than favourable, this is i believe is a result of Trev's incredible knowledge of Lake Awoonga And every fish i caught was on plastic, great
I must thank Trev for his time and hospitality, and old mate i'll be back maybe sooner than later.
I'll try and throw in a couple of happy snaps.
Cheers,
John
