Went for a flick with my dad today in the calliope river after watching calliope river
in the vidieo section. I was working an Engell rooster( red head white body) all
arvo around the stong waterfall. after one hit I moved, into a pool 30m above the
rapids to see what I could get. First cast......Just as the popper is at my feet a
queenie/ barra follows it up, By now my heart is racing. few more casts and
nothing. so I stop working the rocks and belt it out into the middle. wind in 10m
and... BOOF!!! The lure and queenfish are airborn. I follow the fish with my rod in
the air my eyes watching my feet while I work my way across the rocks and
winding my reel to keep the line taught. I steady myself and fight this queenie
(with no more airborn activity ) Up on the rocks and Im estatic. Into the esky
and we head home.
We kept the fish whole and cut of the head, without the head it went 51cm so im
am guessing 59cm with the head.
MY FIRST FISH ON A POPPER
Sorry guys no pics, my phone is in the drink and my dads camera is at work,
All in all a great day,
cheers,
jamie
That river can certainly show up some good fish if you work it right. I've found that generally that river responds best with slower than normal retreives.
