Does my outboard charge my battery?

    Hey there,

Can anyone please tell me if my battery charges while my outboard is running.

    I have a 2003 Johnson 70hp 4stroke.

    Thanks.

certainly does, unless something is stuffed of course.

Yes, providing it is working correctly of course. I assume it is basically the same as the current model, according to the specs it has a 25A alternator.

Thanks guys. I assume it's running properly. I've had no dramas. Its only done 130 hours and just had a major service. I was just wondering if it did charge or not. It also got a brand new battery in October so all should be sweet.

Any outboard that has electric start, EFI, and electric Tilt and Trim is guaranteed to have an alternator ST. It would not operate for long otherwise.

you are right there ozscott. The Johnson specifications sheet actually listed that it has an (25A) Alternator, but a check on the part diagramatics shows it is as a regulated flywheel coil i.e. magneto.

Most (charging) outboards would have Magneto/Stator set up rather than an Alternator I guess!?

Gday Dave - yep mate I think they do - at least the 2 strokes. I think that the 4 stroke outboards run an alternator usually. Its an advantage of inboards that they can run whatever size alternator they want and it makes for very quick charging.

    Cheers
