    Question Any advice?: Tailor as live baits

    Hi fellow anglers,

    Anyone got any advice on the best rig and technique for fishing off the beach for jewies with live tailor?

    I'm new at this style of fishing and would appreciate any tips! I live near a beach that has a lot of 20-35cm tailor at the moment, so I suspect there may be a few jewies around at night...

    Thanks in advance,
    Fly Fisher

    Firstly you will have to comply with size and bag limits, so that is 30cm and limit of 20 for Tailor (in NSW).

    This will dictate the size of your rig. You are going to need a rod and reel that can cast and handle a 30cm+, 4/500gram bait.

    For a bait of that length, would suggest a snelled 2 hook rig, probably a sliding Snell with 7/0 or bigger hooks;

    As to the hook placements, one in the shoulder just in front of the pectoral, and the back one through near the tail wrist.

    Cheers

    G'Day Fly Fisher,

    2*10/0s snelled together works a treat. Generally you wont have to worry about having and outfit that will cast a 30cm tailor. My outfit for fishing these off the beach is a 7 foot 15-24kg live fibre with a TLD 20 and 15kg mono. A tailor that size will generally have enough tow to swim back out into the gutter himself. I dont use a sinker with this rig, just a short double tied and connected via a double uni knot to about 2m of 60lb penn 10x. The 2*10/s finish the rig off.
    the bottom hook of the rig goes in just behind the head (make sure the point is facing up) the second snelled hook goes in between the dorsal and tail. catch your chopper hook him up and let him go in the same gutter. Keep feeding him line until he's out in the zone then hang on!

    Good luck

    Pin him with 2 snelled 10/0 hooks, 1 in the back and the other under tail behind vent, dont cast him as this will knock him around, just drop in wash and let him swim out.

    IMHO i've found that if youve found a nice gutter/hole, the jewies come right in close along the inside edge of the gutter anyhow, so no need to hoik it out a million miles. Also, i found un-bled tailor fillet/head(need treble stingers for more hookups) will work fine if theres jewies round. This saves you having to muck around with keeping a few tailor live in case you miss a hit.....you'll already have a nice strip of tailor prepared earlier.

    anyway mate....just my opinion....good luck on nailin a monster.
