I've decided instead of just sitting around my boat all day using bait and catching anything that comes my way, im goin to get into spinnin for a bit more excitement and alot more physical movement.
i've gotten the flattys down pack, to a point where its almost no fun fishing for them, almost =P
just after some general advice on techniques for targeting bream? the only technique i got for them is lifting the rod and making the gulp minnow skim across the top of the water. and have incorperated the flatty 'lift and drop' technique trying it in shallow to mid water instead of on the bottom
lure/sp types would help too, any basic advice for a first timer im sure would kick start my sucess =D
im pretty sure i got most of my structures down pack, weed beds, bridge pillars, submerged tree's
the gear im using is;
6" carbon fibre 1piece rod
shimano 2500 egg beater thingy
6bl mono vanish line (not a fan of braided, even been thinkin of dropping down to 4bl)
You will most likely get more results from bream if you fish small hard body lures like baby Merlins or attack lures. They have an action that evokes action from bream, a lot more than soft plastics usually do. In saying that tho I have caught lots of bream on SP's and I have found 4lb fireline is the reason why i get more than i miss. Mono hides a lot of the attention bream can give your lures by stretching and absorbing small impacts. Fishing braids brings those small takes to your attention every time.
It takes a fair bit of experience (or is it just patience) to succesfully target bream on plastics.
Notice i said 'succesfully target' not catch. Most sp fisherman will have caught many bream as bycatch on plastics but to succesfully target them is quite an art.
Maybe its just because bream are such a sucker for a well placed HB that it seems relatively hard to catch one on sp?? but small hb are by far the most effective method. ecogear sx40's are probably the first lure in most bream fishos lure kit.
If you want to stick with mono over braid i would at least downsize to 4lb but, as Jack said, fireline will help with the finesse side of breaming.
The main bit of advise i can offer is pause............................always pause..................... dont be in too much of a hurry to get that lure back to the boat. I've had bream hit a lure thats been sitting still for over 10 seconds. 9 times out of 10 they will hit the lure when its still.
If you must try sp breamin i would recommend ecogear grass minnows and small squidgy flick baits. When i did chase bream these were the best producers for me and i have heard good reports about the squidgy critters but not tried them myself. and keep the jig head very light, like very very very light so the sp is almost uncastable.
