    Tailor and soft plastics.

    G'day everyone,

Last weekend I dropped the biggest tailor i have ever seen in my life while fishing for squire with SP's (well in excess of 75cm). Thinking back now tho, of the guesstimate of about 30 tailor i have had on with SP's I am yet to boat one.
The one on the weekend hit as soon as the lure hit the water and i struck him well and he launched out of the water gill rattling and i watched the jig come clear of his mouth. I know this fish had the hook well driven home with the strike i put on him.

I think what is happening is the tailor's gill rattling uses the weight of the jig to help rip it clear of their mouth.

Are other people out there having similar experiences with tailor and SP's?

For the record i was using a 4" Berkley Powerbait and a Nitro 1/8 oz 5/0 jig head, so size of hook shouldn't be an issue.

I doubt that the 1/8 oz on a 5/0 was the problem. I am of the opinion that jigs are not secure on fish that eat the entire jig head and all. The angle of penetration is very poor inside the mouth. I have dropped many good Snapper after screaming runs and the jig and SP come back in one piece

The weight of the lure is an issue on things like 65gm Raiders etc where they can build a lot of force up. Sliders certainly solve this problem

ive fished for tailor using standard abit and i have found when using a running sinker rig to the hook i droped heaps more tailor with a heavyeir weeight sinker on , i do belive the weight aids in the tailor gill ratling and shaking the hooks free.
