Another Potential Threat To Recreational Fishing

On the way to work this morning I heard on the news on MMM Brisbane that Seaworld and Griffith University are today launching a program to determine the effect of climate change, pollution and OVERFISHING on SE QLD reef systems including Moreton Bay.

They are going to do this by training volunteer divers to monitor the reef systems and report back!

No doubt the spokesperson for Seaworld will be the same guy who would have everyone believe that the number one cause of turtle deaths in Moreton Bay is boat strikes. A report in our local paper 2 weeks ago stated that boat strikes account for only 17% of turtle deaths in Moreton Bay. It did not state how many of these turtles were already suffering from floating disease but one would expect it would be at least some of them.

Are we now going to put the observations and recordings of volunteers above the scientific data collected and research conducted by the DPI with respect to fish stocks.

This will be the tip of another iceberg set to sink recreational fishing. I smell another green bomb coming!

Don't worry about green bombs, mate. Fight fire with fire. When the divers are around 'Burley bombs' infused with truckloads of tuna oil should keep them busy. Ha Ha Ha Ha

This would be the same divers making up numbers about the grey nurse sharks at flat rock? We need fisherman as divers umungst that researching.
Put two anti-fishing divers down to record and look what will happen to the data!!

    Spot on Shane

What sort of objective study is this supposed to be?

I can tell you that when I was diving I was uncomfortable about fishos being too close. They have a personal vested interest in supoorting the anti fishing lobby and I doubt that the "research" will be reflective of the real situation

the sea world mob are a real problem. they're arrogant and biased in their 'supposed' research methods - you only need to examine the grey nurse debacle for five seconds to see that. if only the remainder of the public were aware of their motives. i guess they want 'sustainability' so they can keep filling their giant fish tanks for the paying public.

"the sea world mob are a real problem. they're arrogant and biased in their 'supposed' research methods" Not as far as I'm concerned.
I and a lot of other rec anglers helped the DPI with a few fisheries projects a couple of years ago and the asistance Sea World gave us all was invaluable, they couldn't do enough for us. They provided their research vessel as the mother ship, temp holding tanks for the fish, transport, fuel ect. Then they even let us into their complex before it opened to catch XOS fish from the water ski lagoon, arrogant? biased? a real problem?

    Thereisnospoon.

As i said "We need fisherman as divers umungst that researching"

I was told by one of the divers that was asked to research the flat rock grey nurse numbers, that some numbers were exagerated at the time.

If i had a dive ticket i would be first on board.

There is no spoon? Course there is................a bloody big wooden one! first post and stirring the pot already.

I think you'll find that there's a lot of folk on here, that have done their research............I'm assuming that "reasherch" is meant to read "research"?

Kingtin, I better back down you guys know the subject pretty well. It seems the research you have all done seems to say everyone else in the world is out to get you.

And that research you and your folk have done dosent really count if you go on other fishing fourms and cry. Oh and well done on picking out my spelling, you should become a teacher.

If you mention you favour fishing or question their research they hang up on you.

Where do Seaworld net the fish that they use to feed the animals and marine creatures? or are they vegitations?

My understanding is they buy it off pro-fisherman. A local pro here I know has a contract to supply them with mullet etc depending on season.
