    HardBodies Around Pontoons/Rockwalls

I recently brought some HB lures for bream and have been told to flick them around, pontoons, rockwalls and pylons. How deep should these lures be getting because ive noticed them only diving about 1-1.5m under the surface. The reason i wonder this is when people say to use SP they say let it sink to the bottom but when using these hardbodies such as SX40s and Jackall chubbys around these Pontoons, Rockwalls and pylons they only dive 1-1.5m to catch these bream are they getting down far enough?? should i add some other weight or is this were the bream sit??

    Please Help!!

yes deep enough for rockwalls and snags because most are less than 3m deep and lures such as sx40s are suspending lures so the hold in the spot also 1 tip, the bigger the bib the deeper the lure will go also the faster you wind the deeper the lure will go also but the less they hook fish.

    Dylan,

A good angler uses many tools to reach many depths. The bream hang at different levels in the water depending on structure, tide and because they enjoy confusing us. The depths you mentioned sound about right but the chubby with the larger bib should get down a bit deeper.

You will learn to judge which depth is appropriate. If its low tide there will be less water and shallow divers will get to the bottom. If the structure is floating (like a boat hull) the fish will be high under the boat not on the bottom (usually!)

So does this mean i should try using the soft plastics off the bottom aswell.. not just bouncing off the bottom???

Try unweighted plastics or hidden weight hooks. These are both very light and take a while to get down. This means they can spend more time in the strikezone. You can cast an unweighted placcy up from a pontoon and it will slowly drift down underneath.

Also you should searh some old threads on a technique known as pink grubbin. It used to be all the rage.

um try using soft plastics such as gulp shrimps with the nitro torpedo's in 1/50th and also TT hidden weight system jigheads on the shrimp create a very slow sink 2 weeks ago i was using 1/50th nitro torpedo's on a 2" bass minnow and i was throwing it onto rocks that had holes about 1.5m deep and it went over the top and it was about 0.5m deep and i didn't lose one but i still mangaged to pull some nmice bream and cod.

keechie, SX-40s are floating lures, not suspenders.

With fishing pontoons, I find SPs have been the most succesful. 2inch Gulp Shrimps rigged with a 1/40 or 1/28 hidden weight jighead have worked for me.
Hardbodies that sink slowly, such as Tiemo Stick minnows would also be a good option.
With other hardbodies such as SX-40s and Jackall Chubbys. For me they have worked better casting at rock walls and really any banks. Just a slow roll retreive has been best. It is better if the lure is swimming just above the bottom. So you can change lures to deep or shallow divers depending on the location your fishing.

As long as your lure is close to the structure, you should be fine

In my tackle box i have some soft plastics, one bag of Gulp! 3" minnow (Nuclear Chicken) and a bag of Squidgies (Starlo and Bushy's) Squdigy fish 70mm (Drop bear) and also many other various grub SP's, would these lures be suitable for catching bream under pontoons if i put 1/28 or 1/40 jigheads on them???? and also if i changed the jighead on the same lures to 1/8 would they be suitable for flathead?????

    yer just get the smallest.
also try the 2 inch power bait bass minnows in pearl blue.

    Re: HardBodies Around Pontoons/Rockwalls

GCC you would be a good cop, asking all these questions! lol just kidding. Most SP's around 2-3" long are good for bream but that doesn't mean other sizes wont work. My first bream was on a 4" power minnow in perl watermelon (I think thats the color) just off the bank. The key is the lighter the better.

    Cheers, Mick.
