Thank you for your inquiry. If wired to a separate switch, the keys should be illuminated when that switch is on. If wired to a constant voltage source (always on) the keys will be backlit all the time, though not at the same level as when the unit is on and the backlight levels at maximum, even when the unit display is not connected to the NMEA network. Please note that the red and black power leads do not supply power to the unit itself, only the keypad lighting.
