who's got one?
The backligh input doesnt seem to work.
The LCD backighting is always on (and adjustable), as opposed to turning on and off with the backlight input wires as I would have expected.
Also, there is no backlighing on the buttons, only the screen. Is this normal?

Sounds like it must be a "feature" as mine does exactly the same thing.....Out of interest, what motor are you running it with?

Got it on a Merc alpha1 4.3MPI
Had to install another filter as the return line from the injection comes back to the 1st filter
1st trip shows about 33litres/hr for 26 knots, under 30 litres/hour for 20 knots, 55-60 litres/hour flat out at 35 knots and about 18 litres/hour around 10 knots. Boat is a Whittley 630, 3 POB. I thought this was reasonable economy.
I have a few blue-red converters and a few T pieces on the way so I can hook up the 5500C and the trim tab kit too. Gotta love the plug n play abilities of the LowranceNet. Sure beats splicing and birds nest that goes along with 0183

There are two pairs of wires coming out of the LMF-400 one pair is for the piezo buzzer that comes with the unit for warning alarms and the other pair is for the back lighting.
The positive of these two gets connected to your dash/nav light switch, so that when you turn on the dash/nav lights the back lighting comes on.
The colours are white (+) black (-) dash/nav lights and the other are yellow (-) and blue(+) for the piezo buzzer.
I have not connected the dash/nav light wires only the piezo ones so can't tell you if the buttons light up at all

When you do can you let us know. Per Hamish' note neither of ours actually works that way, the Piezo is fine but the backlight does nothing at all when hooked up per the instructions.
It does dim off the backlight controls on any NMEA connected devise which is very nice but you can't see the buttons in any conditions.
Mine was locally purchased but interested if the imported models work any differently (For god knows what reasons).

I am guessing that all the LMF-400's are the same, as are the I-Command gauges as they are made as an OEM for BRP.
So I guess if the buttons don't light on one brand they won't on the other.
Monterey 580 with 150 E-tec 5 adults and 1 child, from what I can remember about 20 litres per hour at 24Kts.
But as I have now installed a fuel memory module I will be able to get some accurate information as the EMM will now be used to measure fuel flow. You know count injector pulses and all that stuff that computors do..........

Thank you for your inquiry. If wired to a separate switch, the keys should be illuminated when that switch is on. If wired to a constant voltage source (always on) the keys will be backlit all the time, though not at the same level as when the unit is on and the backlight levels at maximum, even when the unit display is not connected to the NMEA network. Please note that the red and black power leads do not supply power to the unit itself, only the keypad lighting.

At least they have confirmed it should work suggesting it's a product problem then. Have you gone back to them at all confirming the unit is wired correctly and still no backlighting? (And numerous other users are having the same problem?). Might be worth a try to see what they say.
I'll give Lance at Navico a call as mine was purchased from them here and I should get support. I'll let you know how we go locally.

OK guys, problem solved (Or explained at least)..Answers straight from the Guru at Navico Australia.
Here is how it works...........The "Backlight" wiring, being the Black and White will only work to DIM the backlighting FOR THE DISPLAY ONLY when you have them connected to your Instrument or Nav lights. This feature is the same as your dash light in the car where they dim when you turn the headlights on. If not connected, you backlight will always be at full brightness.
If you have your unit (LMF-400 / i-Command / SMIS) connected to a wider NMEA Network with backlight synch "ON", all units backlights will brighten and dim together on command. The effectively over-rides the Black & White wirings feature altogether so there is no need to connect them if you are using the backlight synch feature.
There is NO backlighting at all for the buttons on any of these displays either which is why they don't light up.

Agree totally but the market often dictates the price point and therefore the spec's. Lance at Navico is the technical guru and very practical, he's tried to get similar features incorporated in hand helds that lack keypad lighting too but the marketers can't justify the price increase it would involve so they get left out apparently.
You can set up the scroll &/or pop up feature to minimise the need to chase buttons at night if necessary. They are a pretty slick unit once you work them out.
