My current favourite surface lure is a Lucky Craft NW pencil in ghost minnow, This a "walk the dog" style surface lure. Another fave is the Lucky Craft bevy popper, A very versatile lure IMO. BTW trevs love surface lures too
Keep smiling, It makes people wonder what you're up to.

hi for small surface lures (towadi's and poppers) i use a few little pull downs of the rod tip and i do that about 3 times then pause for 1-3 seconds, if i see a strike i tend to stop the retrieve for 3 seconds then if nothing i continue slowly much slower then originally. (TIP: when using surface lure don't strike let them suck the lure in then wind on the fish so you don't tend to rip it out of their mouth.

    Dylan,

poppers are a type of surface lure that has a cup face on it. When you work the lure toward you it displaces the water making a popping or blooping noise. The bigger the cup face the bigger the pop. Other common surface lures like the towadi's and luckycraft pencil have no cup and make no pop. They zig zag from side to side, this is called walking the dog.

surface lures of all descriptions are great fun, just make sure your leader is mono NOT flouro because mono floats.

    Re: Planning nerang river trip

as tetsuo said poppers are for pushing water and splashing where as towadi's and other walk the dog lures move water side to side creating smaller ripples. try using them more early morning/ late afternoon as it is a bit quieter and a bit less wind.

Um .....The mouth of the nerang river is about 1-2km south of the spit but seperated by a 6Knot area near marina mirage. I wont be fishing very close to the mouth as i will be mainly fishing around isle of capri, sorrento, benowa, chevron region, so really i wont be anywhere near the spit to answer your question. But yeh put the post up anywayz i'd love to hear how the Seaway and Broadwater are fishing! Also listen out for my report which ill probably add in on Monday as me and my mate (coomera-champ101) are goin on this nerang river trip....which has now been well planned!!

    Re: Planning nerang river trip

Hey, i just saw on the news that the weather in Southeast australia is very windy (eg. melbourne....maybe sydney) and the reporter said it will bring wind up the coast to southeast qld by friday/weekend, im still planning to go out in the nerang river still........is bream/flathead lure fishing harder when it is windy....i will be in relatively protected waters so maybe it will be a bit protected but still, do u think it is worth it??? do fish get put off by strong winds (sounds stupid but just checkin lol)

    Please help!

it is harder because its harder to feel the bite plus its harder t oget the lure in the right spot also it is twice as hard surface fishng in nwindy conditions.
