Thats a huge whiting and to get it on a popper would have been awesome. How deep was the water you where casting into? I am still a popper whiting virgin but would love to catch one that way.

just before work on saturday morning i launched the boat in the tweed.
started of getting a few good bream on stick bait lures.
we fish along a bank on shallow mangroves with a few weedbeds and a bit of broken reef.
with in about 20min of fishing a huge bream came and snached my stik bait gave a few good head shakes and then made a screaming run back into the mangroves at this point we saw the size of the fish as the ling scapped against the roots of the tree then just as he nearly came back out ''ping'' the line broke and he swam away with another trophie.
as the tide ran out even faster we tried a bit of deep fishing which only produced a few smaller bream untill something big and heady took the plastic. at first it just sat in the one spot then gave a big head shake and made a screaming run straight towards the shelf and busted me off. dont know what it was but we thought of a big cod or trevally the way it ran a good 50m against the current with a very tight drag.
we ended up making our way to the shallow sand flats and cast a few poppers for whiting with most of the fish around 25-30cm.
but there were alot of bigger fish just slashing at our lures but failing to hook up. i tied on a larger popper (50mm) and 2nd or third cast a big bow wave came up an then disapired another few pops and the smash! a big whiting connected and gave a good run on the light line.
we netted it and it was my biggest whiting on a popper at 41cm fork length!
a few happy snaps and it swam away.
so all fished were released once again
sorry bout the pic of the whiting on the ruler its says only 39cm but it was bent and i wanted to get it back into the water asap

ON-THE CHEW- im casting in was anywere from ankle deep to 4-5ft. the eco gear vibs are also awsome on whiting in deep water,i had a great sesh using them at boyds bay bridge on the run out tide a few weeks ago at night.
Blooey- its a 50mm luckey craft bevy pop in the cicarda pattern and the tail probebly adds another 30mm but the fish love em, always leave the feathers on as its gets the bigger fish or make up new feathers.
pistle-p- no i released him because i work in a restaurant id rather have ribs or steak! haah
loophole- not sure yet depends if rod want it or not, he has been getting into the snapper again in his new boat
