Mouldy Life Jacket

My good PFD1 Life jacket, vest style has been left in the boat with the cover on while we had all the rain and now liitle spots of black mould have appeared on it.

I have tried some dish washing liquid, jiff and a bit of elbow grease but it is not budging.
Does anyone have any proven methods of removing this mould?

Hi Ryan,

recently had to clean some mould off some of my PFDs as well. Used a bit of bleach in some warm water, and that got it off.

Hi Ryan,

Try some vinegar and warm/hot water, dab on vinegar then wash of with warm/hot water, should come off really easily. Make sure you let it dry before putting it away again.

don't use bleach unless you want to replace your mold spots with white patches. I would try amonia but test it on a bit of your jacket that can't be seen to see if that will wash the colour out first. also the vinger could be worth ago as suggested by fez.

no such issue when I have used bleach on mine. If there is some natural material in the construction maybe, but on the plastics that most PFDs are made out of I don't think so.

I have also used bleach to clean mould off my V bunk cushions (vinvyl with cloth backing), cabin interior walls etc and never had a problem in over 10 years. Not sure on Vinegar (its basically mild acid), it may work but I have never used it.

Bleach or ammonia will also kill the mould which is part of what you need to do to clean it up permanently, otherwise it will grow back in a few weeks.

Squirt on a bit of vinegar, dust on a small amount of Bicarb of soda and wipe off when foaming....safe and natural.

Try the natural stuff first everytime, Shannon lush has a great book called Spotless, might be worth having a look at that I hear it's great for lots of cleaning solutions (AS IN REMEDIES )IAN.

i read recently in a book about vinegar (Yeah i know why was i doing this: i was extremely bored at my mums work) and it said that you placve it on the mould and rub it or something and it somes off, i can't remember exactly but try using the vinegar.

Vinegar is good stuff, the white stuff though, not the brown.
It is also good as an experiment to impress the kids.. get an old film canister from 35mm cameras, put some bicarb in the bottom, drop a few drops of white vinegar and quickly put the cap on.

BOOM ! kids go yay !
