Thumbs up Bay Trip 29-3-2008 Fish ID

    Good Evening

Today Brent and decided to finish what we started the week before.
Late start 8am at the ramp for a trip accross the bay. Not much happend until 11am when i got done once again by a monster and lost the lot. Then i caught a fish i have never seen before in this part of the bay see the attached pic which Brent and i thought it was a Barra "fish id needed". Then Brent and i headed to harrys where the Cod were on the chew we kept only a few. I lost another monster which felt like a big cod. Thanks for coming along Brent

It is a Sand Bass or Dwarf Palmer.

    Psammoperca waigiensis

Grows to about 15" in length. Looks like a dark barra.

    Cheers Jeff.

In Grants guide to fishes he states that "the Sand Bass is quite good eating but lacks the popular appeal of its larger relative, the Barramundi".

Looks like a Sand Bass (or Reef Barramundi). They are OK to chew on

I have never heard off one being caught in Moreton Bay

Thanks for a great days fishing Steve.
The day started out a bit on the quiet side but we managed to get a feed together.
We are experts at chasing the tuna but not catching them.
Have a safe journey down south mate.
    Cheers Brent

The Gill plate looks nasty, ready to slice through an unweary finger or two. Nice feed of Cod!!
