    Koombaloomba dam

Decided to give Tinaroo a miss this weekend and head back to our old patch, Koombooloomba dam. The dam has risen an astonishing amount; the water has managed to reach the top of the dam wall now. The weather was less than perfect with light showers persisting throughout the day as well as an annoying fog making navigation near impossible. After some GPS troubles we eventually made it up to the Tully River which seemed to go on for miles. We followed the creek until finally reaching a beautiful area and some rapids, we persisted casting for no action. We slowly drifted back down stream and dad managed and alright sized sooty. We continued down stream for a few hours, hooking up to a couple of smaller sooty’s before dad and I got a double hook up from the same snag, dad’s was only small but mine, although not pulling as much drag as expected, was about 43cm. after a few more little ones we decided to head home just as the rain came.

    NAGG,
The access to the dam is relatively fine, a couple of pot holes and corrugations but apart from that it's a breeze in a 4X4, just have to keep your eye out. The real difficulty is the submerged trees which cover the dam from head to toe. There is usually the "creek bed" which was highly visible when the dam is low, but now it has gotten to 100% it is extremely difficult to see. If you sit and look for a bit you can eventually make out the track. Apart from that it's a great fishery, the sooty's are everywhere, definitely come for a trip it's certainly worth it for that scenery

    NAGG,
I assume that you are talking about the highway from Cairns, if so we live just south of Cairns and it takes us around 2.5 hours to get there. It makes for a long day if you aren't camping however spend a few days and you don't notice the time. If you can manage to get up to the Tully it is definitely the most picturesque part of the dam at this capacity as most of the rapids and waterfalls are underwater. We found that casting where the bottle brushes aren't that dense and getting the lure right down the back produces the most fish. It's a great area with only a few boats ever on the dam so it is definitely a must fish destination.

    Hi Kyle,

Great fish in a beautiful environment. I can't wait to have a go there myself and "upsize" from the little sooties we've been getting.

    Regards,
    Dave.
