Thread: Fishing River Links - Coomera

Re: Fishing River Links - Coomera

The back eddy is the downstream side of a pontoon. Theres less current there, so the lazy fish will sit there, using less energy. You might have to cast in front of the pontoon to end up behind the pontoon after the lure falls to the bottom. Depends on the current and lure.

Youll see the same thing on bridge pylons, the downstream side has less current. Even the same thing happens at natural locations like where the canal meets the river- one side of the T junction will have the current pushing into it, and the other bank will have less flow, and therefore more fish, especially if its deeper.

Ok....thanks for all ur help, just one more question...........Say im flicking Hardbodies such as SX40's or Jackal chubbys in at pontoons/rockwalls.....in the retrieve ive noticed they only dive about 1-1.5m under the surface.....though when using soft plastics everyone says flick off the bottom....are these hardbodies getting down far enough????

    Dylan,

That is a good question - glad to hear you are applying some good thought processes to your fishing and the advice you get.

Species such as Bream will hold at different levels in the water. Casting SX-40's and Chubby's around the edges of the pontoons will dive to just below the pontoon and attract the fish that are holding under the pontoon. Casting lightly weighted soft plastics will attract the same fish as they drift by, then as they sink will also attract the fish feeding on the bottom.

Now if you are chasing Flathead all your lures need to be on the bottom, so use heavier jigheads so your plastics gets down quicker and use hardbodies that bounce along the bottom or swim just above it.

You will use different techniques for soft plastics thn you use for hardbodies, and even then techniques wil change for different profiles, etc.

Once you start getting onto a few fish you will hopefully start to work out some patterns. Of course places like Ausfish certainly speed up that knowledge too!

    Good Luck

Do u have any recommended deep diving HB lures for flathead.....I recently bought a RMG poltergeist 50mm 3m+ lure which i think is designed for flathead as it dives more then three metres. Are there any flathead lures that are extremely popular???? (Like SX40's are with bream)

    Dylan,

99% of my Flathead fishing is done with soft plastics. I would recommend jigheads in 1/4oz and 3/8oz and 3-4in soft plastics such as Gulp Shrimp, Gulp Pogys, Shimano Fish. Colours such as white, green, pumpkinseed, pink are all good.

As for hardbodies The Micro Mullet is the best Flathead lure around. Pig Lures are also good but you don't see them in as many tackle stores. Any brand name lure will catch Flathead, as long as it is diving to the right depth - just above or bumping along the bottom.

I believe for Flathead hardbodies are good to troll to find the Flathead, but soft plastics are great for hitting an area and will catch more fish.

Micro Mullets dive to 2 - 2.5 metres - this is the only depth.

There are Mad Mullets that start at 65mm that run deeper than this, but the Micro is the gun Flattie hard body.
