Peel Squire 28.03.08

Went to Peel this morning for another go at Soft Plastics. Left Raby Bay at 4:40am and was fishing Peel not long later. With the light rain falling, there was only 1 other boat fishing the area (about 300 metres away) which was good. I had an entire area to drift with no one in the way.

Anyways, I landed 6 Squire. 5 undersize between 30 - 34cm, and one keeper at 43cm (pic below)which is my pb so far. Also got busted by something bigger on the reef and a had a few others hooked but dropped the hook mid fight. + lots of other hits.

Plastics used were gulps 5" jerk shad, nuc chooks and blue pepper neon. The 43cm was on a bpn.

Also as a side note: at what size/stage does a Squire become a Snapper? I've noticed people lately calling 35, 38, 40cm fish as snapper. But to me, these fish are Squire (juvi snapper)

I think I read somewhere here on another forum - the fisheries department are wanting us to call them all snapper and no longer squire because it confuses people.....someone may correct me on this....

Congrats on your PB Summertrance, I will be surprised if you are not up around the 70+ cm PB within a few months if you can get out often enough. When was the last time you got out, last weekend? If once every 2 weeks, and winter on our doorstep ..... I'll read it here.....

"Finga" did a thread on when you call it a Snapper, and the topic has done some miles, let me tell you. So for interest sake, let's just refer to them as "Pinkies" from now on and be done with it?? There is no other answer.

Good luck upping the PB, a 43cm is a good fish!!!

Well Done SummerTrance,

I was there yesterday also, my first trip around that area ( normally fish from Logan to Broadwater). It was a nice day with very calm conditions, i only took a couple of light rods and was well and truely left wanting!! Lost about 5 good fish as i am mainly chasing bream or whiting the bigger fish just had some fun with my 4kg line.... Live and Learn i guess, next time i will be heading that way again with bigger weapons next time.

I also saw alot of prawns being caught on the western side of Russell on the early low tide if anyone is interested

Thanks mate. My work has been really slow, so I actually got out 3 times this week (sun, wed, fri) The first 2 trips wernt very good, with just a few tiny ones. Should be able to get out at least once every 2 weeks when work picks up.
But yeh, that big snap is what im after. next goal is 50cm. and you will read it here

I also just read through the thread of 'whens a snapper a snapper' (well the first 4 pages anyways) There's definatley a good debate there. I'll stick to calling my fish Squire for now, untill I get a big one anyways and i'll upgrade then.

Well done on a PB, you can certainly expect much larger fishing the area and methods over the next few months, mid week sessions an hour either side of the tides early am and late afternoons have been my prime times.

I was in the other boat to the South of you, metallic grey 520 Xtreme, had a similar session with about 6 or 7 to 40 cm and bricked 3 times. I also had 2 bite off's on the take which suggest either Mac's or XOS tailor. Did you have any similar experiences?

Was a fantastic day on the water, I ended up getting home after 6pm and 50 litres of juice later aftre taking the opportunity to explore some ground in the Northern Bay.

PS - From where I came, a snapper is a squire with a bump on it's head but in the bay, some very sizable fish don't have the bump, whatever you decide, they are great fun and good luck with even bigger fish in the comming months.

Wasn't it great having the entire area to ourselves. Mid-week is the way to go!Even with the light rain early, was a great day in the bay.

I regards to bite off's or busts, I only had one that day, which I thought was a bust on the reef, but could have been bitten off. It busted about 3-4 seconds after hook-up, and it did hit the plastic very hard.

I saw you take off to the north and wondered were you were heading. I pulled the pin about 11:30am to get home to the missus and kid, cause that was my third trip this week. Otherwise I could have stayed there all day.

I come from South Australia and it doestn't matter how big a fish is its still a snapper! I mean if u want 2 call them red bream then squire then snapper it doesn't bother me I still know what your talking about! But When peaople say they're not snapper till they get there nobby on their head I dont believe in that in SA i've caught snapper 30lb plus and not every one has a nobby!!! Oh yeah well done on the fish!!!

Congrads on the PB and hears to many more. I 've had a dabble with the BPN and so far have hooked squire and tuna.Keep it up and keep busting those PBs Cheers
