Easter Sooty Hunt
Nic and I headed out over the range on Friday in search of sooties. We returned to a spot we found a few weeks earlier and launched the blow-up canoe for a better look. This was a good looking spot, with heaps of timber, but there weren't any fish to be found. We saw a few tiny sooties getting around the edges, but that was it. About 4pm we dragged the canoe out and headed over to the Hidden Valley cabins where we had booked in for the night.
It turned out to be a great place to stay. Reasonably priced accommodation and meals, plus a great setting.
After a big brekky at the restaurant, we headed off in search of sooties again. Today we were on foot, and hiked into some spectacular country to the west of Hidden Valley. The area we entered was a gorge. We'd fish a pool, then climb up to the next, and so on. In order to access the last pool fished, we had to swim across the lower pool and then scarper up a steepish rock face.
We caught fish in each of the pools, except the very lowest. I used a Manns Stretch 5+, and Nic used a Squidgy paddle-tail 3" sp, on a 1/16oz head. There weren't heaps of sooties, but we ended up with a dozen between us -- not big fish, but still a lot of fun.
We fished from 10:30am to 4pm, but next time we'll get there earlier or stay later. Hopefully we'll find some bigger fish that way.
Regards,
Dave.

Wow what a fantastic report and sounds more like a full on adventure than a fishing trip!

I know that spot very well Dave, but I always come down the gorge. It's almost a fish-a-cast there.
