    Blown Trim n Tilt

I got down to the boat on Friday, first time in two weeks and found the motor sitting in the down position, leg in the water. After kicking myself for forgetting it down, it dawned on me that I hadn't and a quick check on the trim switch confirmed the bad news.

It looks as though another boat has hit the motor as there is a scratch up the leg and a chunk out of the lower skirt on the engine cover, plus a gelcoat crack across the base of the transom - question is this likely to have blown out the seals on the trim n tilt or is this a coincidence? Motor is a '93 Evinrude 175.

Sheeit, strikes me this one is going to cost some money unless I can persuade insurance that it was an accident.

    Hi Brumby,

I had a 93' 150 hp Johnson on my moored boat till recently. Basically same motor I think.

I had to replace the Tilt motor a few years ago and it had gone again when I traded it in recently. I replaced it the first time with a non OEM part because the genuine OMC part was going to take 6 weeks to get out here, so that partly explains the 2nd failure, but nevertheless they seem to be susceptible to corrosion is my observation.

Being moored doesn't help off course , but I did spray it Lanoline to try and slow the corrosion. I was quoted about a grand to replace with OEM, including labour. Helped me decide to upgrade to a new motor

    Cheers

Thanks Dave. Where did you source a non OEM part and what sort of dollars? I'm leaning toward another motor too, but it's probably worth getting this one going again in the meantime - besides, other than a fairly serious thirst she has been a good un. I've been doing the lanolin thing, but as you say corrosion is a problem. I haven't gotten in there yet to see what actually happened, just saw the impact damage and started wondering.

    Hi Carl,

The dealer (Wynnum Marine) sourced it for me. There are outboard part sites around, but assume you will need to pull it out of the water and have it fitted?. Not sure how hard they are to fit for a do it yourself job?

Here is a link to the "official" Evinrude parts site. The prices are $US'

    Carl,

I have an official OMC Service Manual that covers your motor. You are welcome to have it, no use to me now.

Thanks for the link Dave, hopefully it is just seals, ouch USD1,175 for the hydraulic assembly will be a bit nasty by the time it lands here, never mind fitting.

Fortunately the old lady is about due to have her bum cleaned (11 months), so I'll probably try and combine it. Knowing my luck the weather will settle down now that the boat is out of action.

    Re: Blown Trim n Tilt

Thanks Garry, that sounds a bit more like it! Probably a better call to replace rather than try and rebuild something that may be partly rusted out anyway.

I take it that price wasn't from Honda; Goldenseal or similar?

Did you know that the yamaha tilt/trim is the same a Johnson/Eninrude. Im pretty sure there is also a 3rd manufacture that also shares the same trim/tilt, but I can't remember the name..

Shows, you never stop learning on Ausfish! I guess that's why I saw both Yamaha and OMC units referred to as Fast trak on the spares sites.
