draw net or cast net ?

was looking at buying a new cast net but not sure whether to go a draw net or cast net. i know with a draw net theres no chance for livies to get out when you pull up. Price wise a draw net costs more , so its a toss up between a 12" cast net or 10" draw net both for $99

which one would you pick - sacrifice spread for security ? , or does anyone know on sunshine coast where i can get a 12" draw net for similar price , tackle world on nicklin way is only place ive seen so far with draw nets

Mate, you're right..........little gets out of a draw net but if you happen to cop a load of jellyfish that you can't lift.................you'll curse the day you bought one.....trust me

What do you mean by a draw net and is it legal to use one in Queensland? The only nets that I know of that amateurs can legally use in Qld are a cast net, a seine net (bait net) and a dip net.

I believe he is talking about a drawstring cast net?they are ok if ur not chasing bait where trere is a lot of sticks/floatint leaves, debris.i found the one i had more trouble than it was worth with small sticks hindering the drawstring process.i now just have two top pocket 8 and 9 ft and find these work ok for me.

yup yup drawstring cast net. when your pulling up the net after casting it closes the bottom of the net as well rather than having to try to close it yourself when pulling up.

where we throw there is next to nothing that ends up in our nets excpet for bait, bream and small trevally, a lot of the time though you feel the tinks on your line after a cast and nothign ends up being in the net, maybe big flaw in our technique bringing the net to the surface but with the draw net when you feel the tink it always brings up the goodies.

i've pretty much decided on the 10" draw net opposed to 12" castie.

heres a mystery , threw a net out last night pulled up a bag full of baitfish, put em in the bucket , looked in the bucked a minute later they were all dead ?

i did have some herring in the bucket before hand, thinking scales of the herring had something to do with it

yer the herring scales will choke the baitfish and herring them selves.

also it might have been that ur buckett was over crowded and had a lack of oxygen.

if u want to keep god livies u need plenty of water and space and good airationa nd water changes.

When I first saw the post Draw net or cast net I thought you must have meant drag net or cast net and I would have definently said cast net because a drag net is a two person affair.Drag nets are also good but it means getting very wet when you might not want too(also illegal in NSW).I referr castnets as the one that has a draw strings and the one that has pockets.I have one of each but I still preferr the draw net because I learnt to cast with it and it is a' sure catch net'.Nets are expensive anyway you look at them so you might aswell be comfy with the one you buy.

Nufin Flash. I was at Carrara Markets on sunday and in one of the sheds there is a fishing tackle store that had both draw, cast and top pocket nets . draw string were 65 for a 10ft i think about the same for normal net and maybe double for top pocket. Cheers

    Hey,

Ive been using a cast net in my canal and in the broadwater for many years and have caught many good bait fish and even some legal keepers aswell , its not very often you lose fish, yes u'll lose the odd mullet and herring but it doesnt matter you catch so many anyway if your in a good spot. I go down for 30mins in my canal and catch 20-50 mullet/herring and would definety reccomend buying a normal cast net.

    Have a look at Nugget's weekend report (March 22nd). He interviews Bob Standford, a veteran net maker who reckons the draw net is the future;

I have never used a draw net so can't comment myself.

multi strand mono draw net with chain for the lead line is about the best . you wont find them in shops hunt around for someone who makes cask nets, if made properly it would have twice as much net in it s cone compared to a shop one. once you own one you will never go back.you wont get much change out of 150 dollars though.

Re: draw net or cast net ?

I have owned both nets and they both have their pros and cons.

    Drawstring Net
    - If you cast too far it will begin to close before it has hit the bottom.
    - Initial retrieval causes you to lose a few fish, the net bellows out a little bit and gives the fish a chance to escape.
    - The lines going to the bottom of the net get twisted and caught up on snags.
    - Better retention of bait fish (especially the bigger ones).

    Normal cast net.
    - Dont seem to catch as much bait.
    - Have trouble holding onto the bigger bait fish.
    - Dont work as well in big currents compared to a drawstring.

IMHO I would only get a normal cast net in cotton... The nylon ones dont hold the fish as well. For a drawstring net I have a nylon one, they are cheaper to replace than the cotton ones when you tear it up on the rocks.

Herring do not live very long in a bucket at the best of times, the only way to make them live longer is to put in an aerator or change the water every 10-15 minutes.

Mullet can last 30-60 minutes without a water change (even longer too). The more regular you do the water change the livlier the bait will be and the bigger chance you have of catching a fish.

Dont leave the bucket in the sun... That will kill the fish quickly.

Dont have one big mullet in there with a few small herring or mullet. The big one will take all the oxygen and shit in the water making it unihabitable for the other bait.

Make sure you use a bucket that has never had anything deadly to fish in it. A lot of people use buckes that have had lime or chlorine etc in them because they are cheap and easy to get hold of.

I once had a bucket that was the "bucket of death" it was brand new, never had anything in it except for water and fish, yet always killed mullet within minutes. In my mates bucket they would live for hours.

in my experience ive had the samething happen now what i use is a polystyrene box which you can pick up from and fruit and veg shop, i use these all the time now and i wouldnt use anything else, i can keep herring alive for a whole day without even changing the water, i think a few things are going on with this, one is the surface area of the water allows oxygen into the water and the polystyerene keeps the water cold which seems to be why most of the fish die, thats what i was thinking anyway i could be wrong, but my baits last all day
    cheers bennykenny
