Red face Anyone doing shift work?

I'm on the Saturday midnight to 6 am radio watch this weekend. Anyone got some ideas on how to handle the situation. Last time I was a hero, it hit around 3pm on the Sunday and it was good night dear - crash!!

On the positive side, feel free to give me a sitcom report for the log....

    and remember for Easter.....

Did shift work for 30 years. The first night shift was hard going and the last one 30 yrs later was as well and all those in between.

Now I rarely see the sun come up.

    Re: Anyone doing shift work?

I'm a shift worker I can go from say 6am start one day to a 8pm start the next. not good on the body i tell ya.

the best advice i can give you for that shift is the night before stay up as long as you can and get up early. this make you tired so at about early afternoon you need to go to sleep. try and stay up until say 3pm that way you can get some good sleep before you get up and go to work at midnight.
trust me it works i done a few midnight ot mid day shifts and it really helps

another good tip is use alfoil in your windows this blackens even the brightest room.

    good luck

    Hello Bros,
Have not done the graveyard shift for 30 years, however I have done a couple in 20 years nursing within the aged care industry. Shift work plays with your mind, not to mention your social life.

I do day/night shift work and the worst time is 3-4am. If you can move around a bit and shake off that sleepiness, you be right. Caffiene works well too, but take it only when your really tired. We had a new guy start with our crew and he was into the red bulls about 9pm one night(we work 7pm-7am), he was gone by midnight.

I'm used to this now so it doesn't effect me as much, if I remember i'll send you a message there if you have internet access, I'm on nights all weekend.

    Re: Anyone doing shift work?

    Hi qf3,
Another shift worker here. I alternate between days and nights quite regularly and find on my first night shift I head down for a sleep around 1200 noon and sleep for about 4 hrs. I work 6 till 6 and find that a 4 hr kiddy nap in the middle of the day helps out heaps. On my second night shift though I go to sleep as soon as I get home and clean up by 700am and sleep most of the day.
This is what works for me.
    Hope this helps

    Re: Anyone doing shift work?

For the past 9 years I have been doing 2- 12 hour days followed by 2- 12 hour nights, Plus I have to drive 110 km to work and 110 Km home after every shift, sometimes taking 2 hours a trip.

Forget the coffee, a bag of lollies can help to keep you awake, if your not planning on shift work for to long. But the best thing I find on the way home is drink water and plenty of it, Your so uncomfortable busting for a P!ss theres no chance of falling asleep.

    Re: Anyone doing shift work?

Yep I have done it for the last 8 years now. First of all forget about any form of social life..... not going to happen. I personally head off to bed around 2ish sleep to 10pm get up have a coffee and toast and go to work.
The hardest thing is for me is on my day off I'm still up at 1 am wide awake and wanting to go for a fish

    Re: Anyone doing shift work?

When I was on the night shift, used to sleep for the 40min we had for lunch, dinner, breackfast, what ever u want to call it at 2am. Helped get me through the worst of it.

Probably not suitable to you though!

Yes I was doing 12 hour shifts for 10 years. It affects your health pretty badly..But has the advantage of getting up to 5 days off in a row. I havn't done t for the past 2 years & I feel much better now..

Yup that's why I do it.

    I get 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 days of in a row, it's pretty sweet.
But your right it screws with your health.

I use to go on a 4-5 day drinking binge.
Or smoke for 24 hours in a row between shifts, but at least smoke for 20 hours a day.
Or just eat junk all through out the night when I shouldn't be eating anything.

So now I've given up the booze, and the smokes, and now i'm on a low carb diet to get me weight down I gained through not smoking.
As well I'm on the mountain bike, Kyak, and a few weights and chasing me kids around the place. Think I'm slowly getting the body back in order' it's taken me 3.5 years to give up me vices.
