Thread: are all 27MHz the same??

    are all 27MHz the same??

I'm no techno geek so this is a genuine question.

.Is the 27MHz that is used in marine applications the same as the 27MHz that is used in remote 4x4 applications? IE, are the channels the same? Could I use a Uniden Washington base station to contact a boat off shore (in the same general area)?

I am just wondering if the missus stayed on shore with the 4x4 and the telescopic 18' antenna on the Nissan Patrol, could I contact her or vise a versa?

    Cheers,
    Michael

Marine channels are different to land channels on 27Mhz. You can get radios that can switch between land and marine modes, although you can only use one or the other at one time, i.e. you cant switch between land/marine modes without turning the radio off and back on. The GME GX300 27mhz radio does both modes. So I guess unless your land based radio can do both modes, the answer would be no. You would both need GX300 radios or similar.

You can get a standard 27meg GME or Uniden and get a marine chip put in it, that would give you the best of both worlds or just use a land based 27meh hand held 5 watts and pick a channel and chat!
